Aarika Lee’s young family is possibly one of the most colourful clans around. For one, there is Aarika as the mum. The Female Collective member who is a singer and co-founder of branding agency Elementary & Co. is well-known for her effervescent personality, colourful style and knack for amazing headwraps.
Then there is her husband: the cool homegrown rapper Kevin Lester (a.k.a. The Lion City Boy) who is possibly one of the nicest and most talented guys in local music. But when it comes to the real stars of her family unit, they have to be her young brood comprising daughter Zola Mae, four and son Ari Jon, two.
With their inimitable talent, musical background, and infectious energy, it’s no surprise that you might compare this foursome to the Carters (you know, Jay-Z and co.). To tie in with Mothers’ Day, we caught up with Lee to learn what being a young stylish mum means and also tap on her for a curation of gifts from the Club 21 e-tail site.
The godsend accessories since becoming a mother
“Statement earrings because they dress up any outfit real quick. A pair of fab flats – I never was much of a fan of high heels even before the kids. But more than ever, I love good-looking comfy flats. And cute bags: Some days I’m just over carrying a giant bag of treats, changes of clothes, wet wipes, toys etc. I just want to carry a bag for myself.”
A fashionable mum and style icon she admires
“Beyonce. She wears streetwear as well as she wears her gowns – and always looks immaculate.”
How becoming a mother has affected her social media standing
“People definitely love looking at pictures of children, no matter whose feed, so yes most of the time the pics of the kids get a lot of likes. I think I also get into more conversation and engagement with mums-to-be or mothers in the comments or DMs when the post is about motherhood or my children. I think it’s awesome that we can all feel like we’re part of this extended virtual “mom group” to tap into for anything related. We love sharing about our kids, how much they make us laugh, all our fears, hopes and dreams, and it’s also a great place to ask questions about stuff we’re not sure about – new phases our kids seem to be getting into, or health issues, school, etc.”
On whether babies are the new handbags
“Nope. I really wouldn’t want to carry my kids around all day. My back would break. But yes, they are a wonderful addition to my life.”
How her style has evolved ever since becoming a mother
“I actually don’t think it’s changed at all. I’ve always loved comfort and colour and that’s still very much my style.”
A style tip for a cool young mother
“Don’t be afraid to be bold with your dressing, and never pass on a great pair of sneakers.”
Criteria she swears by when choosing a Mothers’ Day gift
“I always give my mum something that my family and I would put together.”
