These Asian Stars Scored In Clare Waight Keller’s Givenchy Collection

by IMRAN JALAL  /   March 19, 2018

Clare Waight Keller (CWK) could not have been a better person to carry on the torch at storied French maison Givenchy post-Riccardo Tisci. Her creative directorial debut for S/S ’18 already showed she had the chops to bring her own edge to the brand and still please the red carpet style pundits. Her maiden couture collection for the brand proved she knows how women want to dress in 2018. And her recent F/W ’18 collection let us know she is sensitive to the codes that the recently departed Hubert de Givenchy built.

Givenchy’s Clare Waight Keller-designed boutique at Hong Kong’s IFC mall.

So what’s next for CWK? We got a preview of her latest creative direction for the brand at the reopening of the Givenchy store at Hong Kong’s IFC mall on March 15. Taking inspiration from a French apartment, the updated store design (it’s already rolled out in Singapore too) boasts a more feminine decor. Take for instance the wrought iron gates and drawn back curtains that frame the store facade. The soft white walls and moldings also add to the private townhouse feel.

To celebrate the store debut, Givenchy’s chief executive Philippe Fortunato invited more than 100 guests and Asian celebrities including Korean stars Lee Dong Wook and Krystal Jung for a cocktail. Which brings us to the next subject: CWK’s designs are pretty darn perfect if you want to just look like a really cool rock star. Here, we pick out our favourites.

K-Pop darling Krystal Jung was in a full-on noir mode with this jacquard suit and black pumps ensemble. Her choice of the nano-sized GV3 bag, chic bob, and that quintessential Korean glassy glow makeup kept things looking youthful but still sophisticated. Our verdict: A nine for pulling off effortless French chic.

Trust Laurinda Ho, the scion of Macau casino tycoon Stanley Ho, to stand out from the crowd who were mostly dressed in black. She opted for one of the collection’s most popular items — the striped boyfriend-fit knit T-shirt — and teamed it up with a white mini skirt. She might not be a rock star, but she sure looked the part. Our score: An eight — just because it would be cooler if she had opted for a pair of ’80s sexy pumps to keep the fashion narrative running.

Korean pop idol Lee Dong Wook received the most cheers from the queue of fans who lined up in front of the store. We give him three cheers for pulling off that handsome double-breasted suit sans any shirt inside. After all, it’s a tricky sartorial trend that works better on women, not men. We say it’s an easy 10 from us for him.

Model Kathy Chow Man-Kei served a dose of power dressing. She chose a tiger print crepe de chine dress that comes with boxy shoulders and  Western-style boots with python skin insets. The whole getup is fun and works for a cocktail event like this one. This mother of two boys, aged three and one, surely deserves an eight.

We’re digging the French vibes that Taiwanese heartthrob Tony Yang is exuding in his Givenchy striped T-shirt and houndstooth tuxedo pants. But what we really love is how a man could look so confident in 2-inch heels like the ones he wore here. More Serge Gainsbourg suave and not Nicolas Sarkozy desperation. For that, we think Yang deserves an 8.5.

Thai actress-model and social media darling (she has 3.3 million followers on Instagram) looked super radiant in her ebony and ivory getup. The cape which comes attached to this viscose crepe number gave the right dose of glamour to her sleek look. A perfect 10 in our books.
