Is anyone over 2016 already? We sure are – but not before we recount the fashion trends that defined the year.
A favourite of the streetstyle set and It girls like Kendall Jenner, band tees were regularly spotted at fashion week, and they’ve even landed on the shelves of fast fashion stores like Swedish retailer H&M. Metalheads may have bemoaned – and even denounced – this “appropriation”, but judging by the fact that they take an ordinary-looking outfit into edgy rocker chick territory, it’s a trend that will probably have long legs.
Not just any plain ol’ bomber, mind you. The ones that rocked 2016 were heavily embellished, often rendered in luxe materials like satin and jacquard, and were reminiscent of the tacky jackets sold in many a souvenir store.
Thanks to Demna Gvasalia, hoodies were probably the #1 cover-up of the year amongst the fashion set. From oversized silhouettes to ones that came with football quarterback-esque shoulders, it was what you had to wear to up your street cred.
From frayed, uneven hems to dual-tone jeans, denim in 2016 was hardly basic, and brands like Vetements churned out some of the most in-demand pieces.
You saw it on style stars Yoyo Cao and Chiara Ferragni, and everywhere on the Gucci runway. And while it may be more commonly associated with military uniforms or artist types, the beret became the It accessory for cool girls everywhere this year as a way to lend a quirky touch to an ensemble.
’90s fashion trends were big in 2016, but none more so than the choker. Models and celebrities like the Hadid sisters, Emily Ratajkowski, Kendall Jenner et al were frequently spotted in versions ranging from delicate ribbon ties to hefty all-black ones.
