This year-end, instead of going for another predictable LBD for the party, consider a new alternative: pantsuits. Celebrities (and their stylists) are evidently thinking along the same lines, with the recent rash of everyone from Fan Bing Bing to Rosie Huntington-Whiteley donning various form of pantsuits.
Here, we highlight the many celebrities who stepped out in the look recently:
There is really no one that comes close to looking perfectly at home in a suit like Doctor Strange actress Tilda Swinton. She’s got the androgynous look down to a tee, and her choice of turning to Schiaparelli is not an unexpected one – both the actress and the brand are known for their off-kilter eccentricity that takes a bold personality to pull off.
Supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is highly versatile. She’s usually in either glamorous gowns or off-duty model looks (read: edgy boots and skintight denim) and this time, she goes with young New York label Monse for a simple outfit of white shirt and pinstriped pants styled with just the right amount of louche.
While Beyonce may be the queen, it’s her little sister Solange who is far more attuned to the fashion crowd. Known to pick difficult colours and unusual silhouettes, she is one of the few who can pull off this voluminous, futuristic suit from label-of-the-moment Off-White. Key to her success? Going for a clean, minimal beauty look and not over-accessorising – though we do love her sense of humour as evidenced by the matching silver hair-clips.
Ides of March actress Evan Rachel Wood is another celebrity known for her love of everything mannish. Slick your hair down like Wood’s for a touch of old school YSL Le Smokin’.
Even China’s reigning lover of princessy gowns – Fan Bing Bing – has shied away from her usual Valentinos/Ralph & Russos/Elie Saabs (read: highly feminine pieces) and went for this dark vampy number from Louis Vuitton.
Kristen Stewart has really established for herself a signature look, i.e. a brand of androgyny that’s rock-tinged. The cut and rich maroon colour of this Sandro suit are perfectly executed and complement her really well.
Need more persuasion? Here are a bevy of selections presenting three different silhouettes. First up, supermodel Karolina Kurkova (left) opts for a highly mannish suit from contemporary label Joseph. The loose silhouette is admittedly difficult to pull off if you don’t have the height. Consolation? It’s really really fashion-forward if you’re able to pull it off. Jenna Dewan-Tatum’s outfit (centre) is easily the most accessible of the three and perfect for local weather. James Bond girl Naomie Harris’ pointed-shouldered cropped suit (right) is killer sharp, finished off with great matching accessories.
It looks like pantsuits are really a thing now – would you care to try it out this party season?
