Clogs Are Having A Moment – And We’re Here For It

How an anti-fashion footwear style became the coolest shoes of 2022.

You don’t have to be a fan of cottagecore to know that the clogs are hot. The folksy sure-footed style which traditionally comes with chunky wooden soles and closed-toe design was the unexpected It shoes of Spring 2021 – and now they seem to be getting more attention than ever.

Part ergonomic, part bucolic chic, clunky clogs were considered anti-fashion for a while. But they notably left their mark at Hermes last year when their various renditions of the style quickly flew off the shelves as soon as they were launched. This season, the French Maison took the sought-after style to new heights with the addition of wedge soles.

Maje proves clogs can go with anything from casual, pretty or dressed-up looks.

Besides Hermes, brands like Tod’s and Maje are also turning to clogs to anchor ensembles spanning casual getups in jeans to pretty feminine frocks – highlighting their versatility.

Recently, Dior Men gave the footwear style a boost of hype cachet. At the Fall/Winter 2022 show, artistic director Kim Jones debuted his first collaboration with Birkenstocks that comprises two of the latter’s popular models – the Milano sandals and the Tokio clogs – that have been updated in signature Dior Gray.

The Tokio is one of the two Birkenstock models that Kim Jones chose for his Dior Men Fall/Winter 2022 collaboration.

On its website, Birkenstock describes the Tokio as “appreciated by those working in the medical professions and in kitchens and by service staff, all of whom often spend hours on their feet” pointing to the comfort and utility of the shoes. To wit, the clogs are a tribute to Monsieur Dior’s well-documented passion for gardening.

In quintessential Kim Jones fashion, the clogs come with a twist? Industrial buckles that are an ode to the Saddle bag. If you’re looking for equally fashionable clogs, check out our edit ahead.
