Red may be the colour of the season and its definitely made its presence felt during the recent Spring 2018 shows, where editors like Giovanna Battaglia gamely showed up (more than once) in head-to-toe outfits decked out in the colour.

What was unexpected however, were folks who opted to go (almost) head to toe in another hue – blue. And it’s not the usual navy or midnight blues we’re talking about here – industry folks went for rich, saturated blues in various shades and fabrics – proving once and for all, that feeling the blues might not be, well, that much of a downer after all.

The key to pulling off the look? Mixing up the shades so that it’s not all one-note. Here, we’ve rounded up a selection of blue-tinged buys in all shades of the spectrum:
The Fall 2017 collection of the always-popular Uniqlo U line (headed by the visionary Christophe Lemaire) has just arrived. This sharp trench coat would be my pick if you can only buy one piece – the defined shoulders and clean lines make it stand out – and the hood is detachable as well, which means this is a versatile piece that can be easily dressed up or down.
Remember when Victoria Beckham showed off this excellent, excellent colour-blocked outfit of a sky-blue shirt paired with apricot-orange pants earlier this year? Trend-setter that she is, it might just account for all the colour-blocked outfits sported by so many industry insiders this past fashion month.
If you, like me, were one of the many admirers of Beckham’s outfit, now you can get the exact same designs for yourself. I love the intense hue of this shirt and it’s not everyday that you come across this unusual shade of blue.
What was the most unexpectedly popular item of clothing amongst fashion week goers this season? This jeans-trouser hybrid from who else but Maison Margiela. It has made appearances in every city from New York all the way to Paris, on everyone from Taylor Tomasi Hill to Irina Lakicevic.
Arty, sculptural earrings are still the preferred way with industry folks to make a statement – see Jenny Walton’s excellent example.
The Clasp bag, which first debuted last season as a vintage-y top handle bag, comes in a XS version this season. I love the deep teal hue of this bag and its structured fame, both of which combines for a timeless yet simultaneously contemporary vibe.
The super popular JW Anderson x Uniqlo collaboration has seen pieces flying off the shelves online and in stores. This deconstructed striped skirt captures the essence of JW Anderson’s aesthetic for a much more affordable price.
These Knife pumps by Balenciaga first debuted in the Pre-Fall 2017 season and has been a huge hit with industry folks – they were spotted on many an editor during the Spring 2018 shows, including on Taylor Tomasi Hill, who paired her hot pink version with the Margiela jeans/pants hybrid listed above.
The most forward way to wear a long dress now? Throw them over jeans or trousers – or alternatively, go with boots – knee-high or higher.
For a simple yet elegant touch, velvet is always a material that catches the eye. The rich blue hue chosen by Dries Van Noten simply adds to the plush + lush factor. Anyone up for a screening of Blue Velvet?
