How do the French – purveyors of effortless chic – do statement shoes? Female discovers the singularly whimsical world of footwear designer Olivia Cognet and her label Apologie.
Before launching Apologie in 2012, the art and fashion design-trained 34-year-old honed her skills at a succession of revered French houses like Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Sonia Rykiel, Carven and Lanvin. Thereafter, she turned to consulting for more quintessentially Parisian heavyweights including Mugler and Leonard.
It includes glitter-covered platform wedges and sandals in a mix of leather and candy-coloured vinyl, while pumps come in a custom baby blue, gingham-printed patent leather with a bow on top.
Like block-heeled, single-soled sandals; Mary Janes (albeit with multiple straps); and – a French favourite – espadrilles
“They’re meant to decorate shoes that I see everyday on the street and add a touch of luxury,” says Cognet.
It starts from $350 for a pair of espadrille slip-ons to $650 for high-heeled sandals – mid-range despite being produced at top manufacturers in Italy, Portugal and Spain. Now available exclusively at La Collection, Level 2 Takashimaya D.S.
