The Loudest Art and Fashion Collaborations to Shop for Now

by IMRAN JALAL  /   March 9, 2017

fashion collaborationArtists have become fashion’s most valuable collaborators as the Marni (cue Dutch artist Ruth Van Beek) and Gucci (cue San Francisco illustrator Jayde Fish) collections this season prove. That formula continues with three other brands that have tapped on the works of well-known art personalities to create some of the most riotous and loudest street-inflected collections. The Loudest Art and Fashion Collaborations to Shop for Now
Ouka Leele and Loewe

No stranger to artistic tie-ups, Loewe’s creative director Jonathan Anderson turns his attention to the works of 59-year-old Spanish photographer Ouka Leele who was a central figure in the country’s countercultural Movida movement of the ’80s. Her surrealist eye, wit and technique of painting black and white images in biting watercolours were the subject of a recently concluded exhibition at the brand’s Gran Via store in Madrid. But here’s another way to enjoy her art if you — like many of us — missed that outing: Loewe reproduced her some of Leele’s work on a range of T leather clutches and a shoulder bag. From $1,350.

Julie Verhoeven and Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs first worked with the eccentric British artist Julie Verhoeven during his tenure at Louis Vuitton. Fast forward to spring summer ’17, and the duo are teaming up once again for what is their most extensive project yet. Verhoeven’s signature cartoonish and eclectic illustrations (think frogs, spray cans and pill capsules) come to life as embellishments and applique across about 75 items from ready-to-wear to bag charms. These super fun details add the crazy cool factor to Jacobs’ provocative collection. From $55.

Dallas Clayton and Vans

A cult favourite, American artist Dallas Clayton carved his name as the author and illustrator of the children’s An Awesome Book series. He puts that quirky child-like squiggles into work with for his Vans x Dallas Clayton range, giving the kicks a sort of DIY quality. $109.

Andy Warhol and Billabong

Surfwear is big news this season and Aussie beachwear label Billabong gets our vote for its Americana Pop Art references. Why? Because it teams up with The Andy Warhol Foundation, featuring some of the late artist’s most iconic works like the Flower prints. And if you don’t quite see the link between Andy Warhol and the beach, just consider this trivia. He once said that “I came out of the womb on a surfboard” and spent two weeks in Southern California in 1968 documenting surfers for his film San Diego Surf. From $29.90.

Like this? The Juste Un Clou jewellery range from Cartier just got bigger, follow these top models on social media and street style, and learn where to get Dover Street Market Singapore merchandise before the store’s July launch.
