Street casting your models have been the M.O. of many brands when it comes to creating buzzworthy ad blitzes. But when it involves a star documentary photographer like British documentary lensman Mick Rock (he built a name for photographing music royalty like Syd Barrett, Blondie, The Ramones and The Sex Pistols) and some of the flashiest personalities and coolest seniors from Rome, the result is pure fashion fantasy.
The man behind combining these two dynamic worlds together is none other than Gucci’s creative whizz Alessandro Michele. For the brand’s Resort ’18 collection, he and Rock pooled 23 different personalities to model the colourful and Renaissance-inspired clothes and accessories and shot them within Rome’s apartments and the city’s parks. The result is a series of unfettered portraits titled “Roman Rhapsody” that showcases the characters of each and every one of the names Rock photographed.
But of course, there is a twist. Each person was also told to take a personal item that encapsulates their personalities to the set — giving an intimate quality to the campaign. Here, we highlight the roll call of cast members in that photo shoot along with the personal paraphernalia that embodies their spirits.
