Our Fashion Editor Zooms In On His Favourite Pieces From The Chanel Fall Collection

From riding boots to match any look to a hair accessory that comes with a slight Goth girl influence, we highlight the different ways Chanel is reimaging the feminine wardrobe for Fall/Winter 2020.

by Chia Wei Choong  /   September 27, 2020
There is a nuanced romanticism in the way Virginie Viard shapes the Chanel Fall/Winter 2020 collection.

Virginie Viard‘s vision for Fall/Winter 2020 at Chanel embodies the free-spirited femininity of the modern woman. She translated that mood with a collection that focuses primarily on easy separates like jodhpur trousers, silk tops, and obviously, Chanel’s iconic tweed jackets.

The handful of dresses presented were rendered in silk taffeta or velvet (all done in black). They eschewed any ostentation, relying instead on cut and silhouette to translate the collection’s nuanced romanticism through gigot sleeves and gathers.

And as with all Chanel collections, the accessories completed the looks with their precious finishes  – a testament to the craft and flair that are at the heart of the maison. Click through to see 10 ways all of  these elements come together to create the modern woman’s wardrobe.

Never underestimate the power of a colourful statement bag
image

Released last year, the Chanel 19 gets an update this season in an irresistibly cheerful pink. Also, who’s going to object to a little pink-on-pink action as seen in this ensemble, that reminds us of our favourite blonde, Elle Woods?

Invest in a pair of riding-style boots
image

These cuffed high boots might be more versatile than you think. Viard styled all 72 looks in the show with these heavy heeled boots (yes, even with her cocktail dresses). Inspired by Coco Chanel’s personal love for equestrianism they project an image of fearless femininity and freedom.

Create drama with an LBD
image

We fell in love with Kaia Gerber’s dress the moment she hit the runway. This simple fit-and-flare bustier dress features removable puff sleeves that create an air of drama without being over the top. But dare we say, we might love her deep brunette bob just a little more as it gives the overall look a tough, cool girl sensibility.

A camera bag is a handy casual accessory
image

Compact in size – a S-sized to be precise – and finished in Chanel’s signature caviar leather, the beauty of this quilted camera bag lies in its simplicity. It’s pretty diamond silhouette also allows for a longer zippered opening at the top, which means less fumbling.

You can never go wrong with black pants and a white shirt
image

Quintessentially Chanel, black and white are definitive house codes. The classic pairing of a white shirt and black pants never goes out of style. Throw on some statement jewellery and you’re good to go.

Elevate your little black bag
image

The precious details on this classic black bag made a huge statement when worn with the more sombre looks from the collection. Lest you think it’s purely decorative, it actually functions as a clasp that has cleverly woven in the maison’s interlocking C motifs.

Accessorise your hair

The jewel-like Maltese cross that embellishes this gauzy silk hair clip is equal parts school girl and gothic bride. It also reminds us of something Blackpink member and Chanel ambassador, Jennie Kim might wear in her hair in a music video.

Go for XL-sized pearls
image

Coco Chanel has always favoured this aquatic gem and was often photographed wearing long strands of pearls draped on her neck; the long strand necklace has since become an icon for the house. This season, the oversized crystal pearls featured as embellishments on dramatic cuffs and as bracelets are a nod to that enduring legacy.

Give basic knits an opulent upgrade
image

Much of the jewellery and hardware featured in the collection have been inspired by the Maltese cross – a motif that Chanel and Sicilian nobleman Duke Fulco di Verdura introduced to the maison’s costume jewellery in 1927. Virginie Viard translated that motif into a jewel-toned embellishment on an intarsia sweater.

Consider a white bag

Karl Largefeld reinterpreted the 2.55 when he joined the house in 1983. The 11.12, also known as the Classic Handbag, gets a seasonal update in arctic white tweed. We like the nonchalance of how it was styled in the show with the bag in hand on a shortened chain.
