Fashion Files: The Aspiring Photographer Rocking The Eccentric ‘Grandma’ Aesthetic

In this monthly column, we take a peek at the wardrobes of Singapore’s low-key style stars. This August, we chat up 21-year-old aspiring photographer and fashion media student Bridgitt Wan, who first caught our eye at an industry panel discussion with her fluorescent green buzz cut and eccentric grandma-inspired getup.

How would you describe your style?

I’d describe it as “whimsical grandma”. I love old school fabrics like crochet and lace and am really into tie-dye right now. I love mixing those fabrics with bold and vibrant colours and pairing them graphic tops and bottoms.

Did you spend a long time cultivating your aesthetic?

I was experimenting with my looks through the years but one thing that stayed consistent was the bold colours in my dressing. I like having a pop of colour in my outfits so I took that into account and started mixing it with the “grandma” aesthetic which usually involves loose and flowing garments.

Who is your style icon?

(California YouTuber and marketing consultant) Rachel Nguyen (@thatschic) as her wardrobe consists of a lot of reworked vintage pieces which she still keeps chic and modern. I personally feel that vintage pieces are usually very timeless.

A lot of my inspiration also draws from the Japanese aesthetic of natural kei. This style involves aspects of appreciating feminine looks with a natural look that involves a lot of earthy tones and loose fits (think cottage/prairie look). I play around with these themes and add my own flair to go with it.

How big is your wardrobe?

Enough to mix and match my outfits, but not big enough for my liking.

Describe your go-to everyday outfit.

Something effortless. For example, an animal-printed dress (above) paired with my Dr. Martens sandals. I’m very into the loose silhouette.

Is there something you’ll never be caught wearing?

Tight-fitting or body-hugging garments as I don’t usually like to show my body figure.

Where do you normally shop?

There are two places that I mostly go to for my shopping. The first will be Taobao as it is easier and faster to find pieces that fit my style. I also like going to thrift shops in Lucky Plaza as it’s always fun and satisfying when I find a good and unique piece. The top I’m wearing in this photo is from a thrift store in Lucky Plaza while the skirt is from Urban Revivo.

How often do you shop?

Probably once or twice a month.

You’re even more experimental with your hair colour and hair cuts. Where do you get it done?

I get my hair done by Koji at Kizuki+Lim because he knows exactly what I want and what will look best on me. I get inspirations from a lot of Japanese hairstylists on Instagram. These include @wataro0821 & @tsubasadicky; their style is unique & fun.

What’s the most alternative hairstyle you’ve had?

It would be this dye job (above) – I’ve never tried so many bright colours in one hairstyle before.

image

What is a recent purchase you’ve made?

This pair of Dr. Martens sandals. I love that they come with platforms which is a necessity in my shoe collections. Also, they are so easy to pair with any outfit.

Who are your favourite brands?

Sacai for its mishmash of prints and Pleats Please Issey Miyake for its colours and geometrical silhouettes.

What made you decide to dabble in photography?

I was introduced to a YouTube channel called Negative Feedback which is run by George Muncey. It is mainly focused on film photography. He does a lot of reviews for different film/SLR cameras. He also brings the viewers around with him to shoot using different cameras and that was how my interest in film photography started. I started by dabbling in street photography and slowly move on to fashion photography because I was always into fashion.

Tell us more about your style of photography and your influences.

My photography focuses a lot on the concept. My photos have a lot of textures through the use of fabrics on set as backdrops, props, or as part of the styling. I don’t really have a specific photographer who I reference. I usually have a concept in mind and then go through Pinterest to create mood boards accordingly.
