That classic image of the fashion girl sipping on her non-fat latte, eyes shrouded in dark sunnies may seem trite, but it’s such a popular trope for good reason(s). Firstly, a pair wisely chosen allows one to catch a cat nap on-the-go without anyone noticing. Secondly, they’re one more outlet to express your style and experiment with trends (read: the rise of micro frames, sporty sunglasses, and simply all the best sunnies out there). And thirdly, well, they do what they were fundamentally born to; protect your eyes from the sun’s rays.
But it’s South Korean eyewear label Gentle Monster‘s latest collaboration with Alexander Wang that introduces a fourth factor to the list: a little cheeky empowerment in line with our generation’s proclivity for (well-deserved) self-love. On all three colourways of the rectangular frames, the acronym ‘CEO’ is emblazoned across the arms — to which, Wang was wittily referencing his stepping down as CEO at his eponymous fashion empire. All in good humour and, a little harmless self pat on the back despite the “setback” (see caption below).
