The Affordable (Really) It Bag All The Coolest Street Style Stars Are Carrying

by KENG YANG SHUEN  /   September 28, 2017

Fashion does get a bad rep (among other things) for its high prices but you’ll be glad to know that the latest bag popular with the fashion set could possibly be the most affordable iteration yet.

We’re talking about the classic grocery string bag – it may not be so familiar here in Asia but it’s a been a European staple for decades. In recent months however, the humble bag, used to carry everything from fruits to loaves of bread, has been surprisingly popular with industry folks. We may often talk about fashion being democratic these days but in this instance, it seems to ring true – the bag traditionally costs only a few dollars.

Here, we take a look at how industry folks have been wearing it during the various fashion weeks:

The Affordable (Really) It Bag All The Coolest Street Style Stars Are Carrying
#1: Maria Bernad

My newest street style star discovery, the 22-year-old Spanish blogger and vintage collector Maria Bernad’s USP is making vintage styles look effortless cool. She was included in my best-dressed list from Milan Fashion Week and here, her penchant for the ’70s is clear. Complementing her earth-tone wardrobe was a dark green string bag.

#2: Irina Lakicevic

Editor in chief of Mint magazine, Lakicevic gravitates towards cool, intellectual brands like Celine and Loewe. Here, she sports the most eye-catching pair of polka-dotted Celine pumps and a large string bag that adds a bit of offhand charm to her otherwise polished outfit.

#3: Adi Heyman

New York-based blogger Adi Heyman caught our eye during the opening week of fashion month with her deliciously contrasting colours – navy polka-dotted Balenciaga F/W’17 pumps and a bright yellow string bag.

#4: Soo Kang

South Korean blogger Soo Kang went for a decidedly more breezy vibe with a maxi dress, straw hat and sandals – the casual string bag was bang on-point with her more relaxed outfit.

What can you put inside these bags? Anything and everything – here, Bernad showcases her with a book (which to me is an indispensable companion in any bag).

#6: Cotton net shopping bag, S$5.14, Lazada.sg

Yes, this may just be the most affordable “It-Bag” of all time! Being environmentally-friendly as well? Perfection.

#7: Linen string bag, €35.00 (approx. S$56), Thisispapershop.com

This Is Paper, an online shop based in Warsaw, Poland, offers a more stylish take on the generic string bag – and it’s one that I’ll be snapping up for  myself.

Moreau leather bucket bag, US$375 (approx. S$510), Staud.Clothing

For those who prefer their bags a tad more luxurious, consider Staud’s (a new up-and-coming LA-based label) version, which basically combines a bucket bag and a string one.
