Gucci’s Fall 2020 Collection Shows You The Magic Behind The Curtains, Literally

Even by Gucci’s eccentric standards, the brand’s Fall 2020 show was something to marvel at. We highlight what you need to know about its latest collection.

by KENG YANG SHUEN  /   February 21, 2020

Alessandro Michele has always been a passionate showman. Regardless of whether you’re a fan or not, the man knows how to stage a spectacle, and his latest presentation for Gucci was one that goes back to the “basics” – that of respecting and elevating every part of a fashion show, right down to even the unseen workers backstage that have always been a crucial element to any show, by having them front and center. Here, we take a look at what transpired at Gucci’s Fall 2020 show and what you’ll do well to keep an eye on:

Gucci's Fall 2020 Collection Shows You The Magic Behind The Curtains, Literally
1: Going down the rabbit hole
image

This season, the eclectic wizard that is Alessandro Michele turned the concept of a fashion show inside out. Show attendees entered the arena only to encounter the hair and makeup stations, which are traditionally backstage. The runway set itself was a revolving carousel and the curtains fell away to reveal a backstage-like atmosphere, with assistants of every kind (dressers, makeup artists etc) who don’t usually get the limelight, now front and center, helping to get each model ready before they took their alloted spot all around the circumference of the carousel.

2: Get weepy
image

Gucci under Michele has always had memorable beauty looks and this season was no exception – the brand’s global make-up artist Thomas de Kluyver created this inky look with Gucci Beauty‘s soon-to-launch mascara and a little bit of water.

3. Mary Janes are back...
image

With a series of creepy-kawaii preview posts on Gucci’s Instagram centering on antique dolls and tinkling music boxes, it was pretty clear that this season would be focusing on the apparatuses of childhood. Fittingly, a key footwear style at the show were these elevated Mary Janes. How to wear them in real life? Just take a look at Harry Styles’ Gucci ensemble he recently wore to the Brit Awards, where he debuted a similar pair on the red carpet.

4. As is an old Gucci classic
image

Now this is one Hall of Fame-r that predates most It bags currently enjoying a revival today – the Jackie, a hobo shoulder design first introduced by the Italian maison in the ’50s and popularised by none other than Jackie O herself in the ’60s when she was spotted wearing it on numerous occasions.

5. Hail the dark romantic
image

An extravagant, darkly romantic mood has been sweeping through notable collections for Fall/Winter 2020 – see Rodarte, Marc Jacobs, Erdem et al. Gucci’s fetishistic pilgrim-meets-Lolita-on-acid only served to further reinforce that impression. We also couldn’t help but see tinges of Little Women and as well as possibly a nod to the upcoming adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel, Emma.

6. Say hi to a familiar face
image

One of our favourite models, the Hongkong-born Elaine Kwok, has recently become a Gucci favourite. She made her debut with the brand in January with the men’s Fall 2020 show – also in a cute babydoll number – and returned yesterday with a similar outfit. With her signature shorn ‘do and striking features, it’s not hard to see why Michele has fallen for Kwok – here’s what the model had to say about why she decided to shave it all off.

7. Expect more Disney icons in the Gucci fam

ICYMI, Gucci recently launched a special CNY capsule collection centered all around Mickey Mouse. Joining the famous rodent is another marquee name from the Disney universe, Daisy Duck, which appeared as small jewellery pieces ranging from earrings to brooches.
