From Leopard To Python, A Failproof Guide To Nailing Animal Prints

Finding it a challenge to style your animal-inspired garments? We’re here to help, giving you options for everything from leopard to python prints.

by Sean Tham  /   September 18, 2018

Ostentatious and loud, animal prints are a big feature on the runways of Fall/Winter 2018, with Tom Ford, Zadig & Voltaire and R13 showcasing these fierce patterns in bright hues. From vermilion, to neon orange and lemon tones, the new animal print is one that you just can’t miss.

But how do you style the look? Our rule of thumb: don’t be afraid to pair them with different sorts of patterns (stripes, geometrics, florals). The look is statement-making, but can still be uber wearable. We put together looks you can take cues from.

Leopard Print

Animal prints are perfect for the career woman, as they’re classic enough for conservative settings, but interesting enough to keep you stylish. However, we recommend you to keep everything sharp; wear a leopard print skirt with a blazer — go with a checkered jacket that matches the tones of the skirt — and a neat pair of heels.

Leopard print silk chiffon maxi skirt by Sonia Rykiel, £885 (S$1,594), via Net-a-Porter; Checkered wool blazer by Blazé Milano, S$1,935, via Mytheresa; Leather heels with knot details by COS, US$225 (S$307); Colourblock clutch by Delpozo, S$1,890, via Farfetch; Gold plated hoop earrings with mismatched pearl details by Alighieri, US$513, via Matchesfashion; Cat eye sunglasses by Zara, S$39.90

Zebra Print

We love a pant for this pattern, but select a nude-orange hue so the print is less in-your-face. Complementary colours are the way to go here. To pull together this look, we picked a shirt and bag in the same colour spectrum.

Zebra printed pants by Zara, S$99.90; Printed cotton shirt by Dries Van Noten, €355 (S$565), via Mytheresa; Suede slingback heels by COS, US$190 (S$259); Leather purse with net details by Jacquemus, US$683 (S$931), via Matchesfashion; Tinted square sunglasses by Oliver Peoples, US$380 (S$518)

Tiger Print

Are you lounging by the pool on a warm Sunday with mimosas on tap? This is a setting where you can go bright and bold, and there’s no other print but tiger for it. The yellow tiger-print skirt paired with a yellow bikini and super accessories will make you feel a million bucks.

Two-piece bikini set by Sian Swimwear, S$299, via Farfetch; Leopard printed pleated silk skirt by Rixo London, US$315 (S$429), via Moda Operandi; Flat leather slides by Zara, S$59.90; Leather and suede shoulder bag by Chloé, £1,340 (S$2,412) via Net-a-Porter; Classic aviators by Saint Laurent, S$490; Brown resin drop earrings by Cult Gaia, £170 (S$304), via Net-a-Porter; Gold Satyr motif ring by Oraïk, price available upon request

Python Print

Python usually comes in classic, monochromatic hues and thus, you’re safe to pair your python-print anything with quite a large range of colours. Match a pair of printed trousers with a dusty pink top and floral motif earrings — you’re set to take on the urban jungle.

Python print lamb leather pants by A.L.C., US$1,295 (S$1,765), via Moda Operandi; Ruffled checkered blouse by Rejina Pyo, S$569, via Farfetch; Leather sneakers by Golden Goose, S$543, via Farfetch; Colourblock beaded crossbody bag by Rosantica, US$490 (S$667), via Moda Operandi; Floral motif metal earrings by Zara, S$24.90

Cow Print

If an animal print piece of clothing is just too much for you, pick an animal-print accessory like a hat. Other items like bags, shoes and even bracelets bring that little touch of texture and detail that reflects the trend.

Cow printed rabbit fur felt hat by Gigi Burris, US$435 (S$592), via Moda Operandi; Cropped wrap top by Jacquemus, US$525 US$263 (S$358); Flared jeans by Stella McCartney, S$665, via Mytheresa; Leather mid heel booties by Topshop, S$179; Mini leather bucket bag by Nico Giani, £315 (S$563), via Net-a-Porter; Beaded hoop earrings by Zara, S$29.90
