If you haven’t heard, Marc Jacobs is releasing a capsule collection of 26-pieces modelled exactly after the same looks he showed in his highly memorable Spring ’93 collection for the American sportswear house, Perry Ellis.
To say it was controversial would be an understatement — the collection, which came out at a time where the high-octane, glamorous looks of the ’80s were still lingering, garnered harsh reviews from many critics (Cathy Horyn said “for a major Seventh Avenue fashion house to put out that kind of statement at that kind of price point is ridiculous”) and Jacobs was subsequently fired from the label.
Setting aside the obvious appropriation issues, the new collection, which launches later this month, looks likely to be money in the bank for Marc Jacobs, especially for those too young to have understood the furore over the original ’93 collection when it first launched.
