The Millennial Way To Do Pink That Will Actually Get You Likes

by IMRAN JALAL  /   August 24, 2017

Fashion hipsters, design pundits and basically anyone worth his or her perfectly-choreographed Instagram post still debate on what exactly millennial pink is (for the record, it’s somewhere between salmon pink and a faint rose hue). We have a more modern approach to doing pink the millennial way: by wearing the pretty shade sans any princessy associations.

The Millennial Way To Do Pink That Will Actually Get You Likes
#1: Your dress should look like a Pop Art piece, not a pop princess's outfit
image

A Mod-style shift a la Mary Quant is the most fashion-forward way to do this. Our top pick got to be Prada’s renditions that sport original illustrations by Robert E McGinnis who was behind ’60s movie like Barbarella.

Faux leather shift dress, $1,950, Prada

#2: A status watch can still come in pink
image

It doesn’t just have to be in a classic colourway (gold, brown, black, what have you). A luxury timepiece with traditional trappings like a tonneau-shaped case and poetic moon phase complication looks less stuffy in an eye-catching colour.

Spirit of Big Bang Moonphase titanium watch with sapphires on alligator skin and rubber strap, $60,200, Hublot

#3: Gravitate towards statement millinery
image

Reminiscent of a monastic veil, Alessandro Michele’s irreverent hat design does not look precious or genteel despite being in a sweet blush pink.

Felt hat with crystals, $1,720, Gucci

#4: Marry sweet with street

Rihanna showed us how to do it with her Fenty Puma collection last season with her macaroon-hued kicks. Our vote this season goes to these super easy slides.

Satin and leather slides, $190, Pedder Red

#5: Do it subtly with accessories
image

Add pink accents with smaller pieces like a belt or a pair of sunglasses, instead of going full-on with an outfit in the colour pink.

Dolce & Gabbana acetate spectacles with crystals,$405, Spectacle Hut

#6: Go graphic with those rose-hued gems
image

As in bold and geometric baubles like the Ritratto series by Italian label Pomellato. Each of the 101-faceted stone used for the pieces is inspired by the portrait cut, an antique Indian cut used to cover miniature paintings.

Ritratto 18K rose gold rings with quartz and diamonds, $6,000-$9,500, Pomellato

#7: Elevate classic footwear to cool territory in the colour
image

All it takes to turn a pair of classic shoes — slingbacks or mules for instance — into something fashionably trendy is a pretty pink shade.

Suede slingback pumps, $94.95, H&M

Shearling mules, 3.1 Phillip Lim

#8: Austere frocks can look great in the colour too
image

The conservative mood in fashion may make austere black dresses in vogue. But the silhouette works just as well in soft pinks too.

Maison Rabih Kayrouz taffeta dress, $2,085, www.matchesfashion.com

#9: Cords shed their retro vibe in the colour
image

A pair of corduroy goes from ’70s hippie to modern hipster in powder pink.

Corduroy jeans, $89.90, Mango

#10: Pink sneakers have an Insta-like factor
image

A cheery hue like pink makes for great #shoeporn moments.

Velvet and rubber sneakers, $320, Pretty Ballerinas

#11: Add a little quirk to an all-pink dress
image

Trust JW Anderson and his avant-garde ways to give an off-kilter quality to an otherwise saccharine sweet summer dress.

Cotton dress, Loewe

#12: Opt for a kitschy cute print
image

Because nothing says ironically fashionable like an adult dressed in a sweater with a child-like motif.

Coach 1941 cashmere sweater, $895, Coach

Wool sweater with crystals, $1,860, Miu Miu. Prices unavailable unless stated
