THE CYBERGOTH IDOL: ALMA
image
Alma-Sofia Miettinen, who goes by just the moniker Alma, is one of the most exciting names in pop music today. Her inviting raspy vocals have been compared to Beth Ditto and she’s also found a fan in one Elton John who played her song Karma on his Beats 1 radio show. She recently lent her songwriting chops to the single Don’t Call Me Angel by Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and Lana Del Rey. On the style front, the 23-year-old Finnish singer and former reality TV singing competition alum strikes a hard-to-miss image which looks like a Marine Serre meets Lotta Volkova experiment. Cue her shock of neon yellow hair and her penchant for imposing black get-ups that have been described as anything from cybergoth to tactical.

THE AVANT-FOLK QUEEN: CATE LE BON
image
Like her stylish avant-garde vocals, folk-rock Welsh musician Cate Timothy, who is best known by her stage name Cate Le Bon, possesses an eclectic yet sophisticated sense of style and aesthetic. Oh, did we mention she also dabbles in carpentry and pottery-making too? She once told an American fashion magazine that her stage look and her everyday look are one and is made up of plenty of jumpsuits, fringed T-shirt dresses and lots of vintage clothing with a touch of Parisian influence. Cop her look if you’re seeking a cool bohemian #inspo.

THE ANDROGYNOUS STARLET: SOAK
image
Northern Irish musician Soak – a portmanteau of soul and folk – first popped up on our radar for her spine-tingling voice and hypnotising atmospheric sound. The 23-year-old, whose real name is Brile Monds-Watson, also caught our attention for being one of the newest names in the vanguard of queer musicians rocking the industry now – which includes the likes of King Princess and Janelle Monae. Her low-key and smart gender-neutral wardrobe comprises of trusty menswear-inspired staples like the camp shirt, loafers and blazer.

THE KAWAII PRINCESS: SARAH MIDORI PERRY
image
Just like Kero Kero Bonito’s brand of bubble gum pop which melds tunes from J-Pop, dancehall and video game soundtracks and lyrics in English, Japanese and Japlish, its frontwoman Sarah Midori Perry is a walking mash-up of style influences. A native of Hokkaido, the half-Japanese half-British Perry moved to the United Kingdom in the mid-2000s. Her eye-popping outfit choices reflect a colourful and diverse background with Harajuku influences as well as a ’90s
raver kid aesthetic.
