The new Netflix original Glow that is running now reboots a pop culture fix that was big back in the ’80s: professional women’s wrestling. To the uninitiated, the title stands for “Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling” — a direct nod to the original women’s professional wrestling league of the same name that inspired the series. It follows a motley crew of aspiring actresses and entertainers plus a stunt performer who are transformed by a B-movie director into a cast of entertaining wrestlers-performers.

Stylewise, the fashion in this 10-parter reflects an eclectic off-duty mix of loud and tacky punk band tees, tourist merch tees, and leotards that are a more casual and real take on ’80s fashion. But on the ring is where the “showgirl” quality of the wardrobe truly shines.

Among them, the gothic-meets-frou frou ensemble (of a character called Sheila the She Wolf) that could come out of a Marc Jacobs editorial, and a star-spangled bodysuit for the character of Debbie which takes inspiration from the wardrobes of divas like Dolly Parton and Cher.
All these flamboyance calls to mind the Vegas-themed costumes of Moschino’s Resort ’18 collection and even a bodysuit-meets-crystal leggings combination at Gucci for F/W ’17. While the outfits in the show do cross into the costume territory, there are plenty of wearable iterations on the pret-a-porter collections this season which can make you add a little dose of drama into your everyday pieces too.
