If you’re a millenial, chances are Power Rangers probably played a big part in your childhood, along with Pokemon, Powerpuff Girls and X-Men.
With the newly rebooted Power Rangers film (there are actually two movies previously in 1995 and 1997 – but was apparently poorly made with low budgets), it’s clear that ’90s fever is at an all-time high right now.
I mean, need we even mention Beauty and the Beast – the Disney animated version (that most of us are familiar with) that came out in 1991 and its 2017 version with Emma Watson as the lead that is currently dominating worldwide box offices?
As with most Hollywood updates, the latest Power Rangers film has undergone a slick makeover – gone are the cheesy spandex suits (looking back at the TV series now sure underscores the cheese factor) and the new suits are made to resemble “an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made”, according to production designer Andrew Menzies.
While it’s a more organic look for sure and befits the sci-fi nature of the series, the key point about these suits were their colours – it allowed for kids to pick their favourites (thought the show is not without criticisms – the original series casted an Asian and an African American actor for the roles of the Yellow and Black Rangers respectively).
