Directed by Lee Daniels, The United States vs. Billie Holiday stars Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Andra Day in her film debut as the legendary musician. There’s also a starry supporting cast comprising Trevante Rhodes, Natasha Lyonne, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Garrett Hedlund.
The screenplay was penned by Suzan-Lori Parks, the first African American woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, ensuring that the storied singer’s works (which helped to propel the civil rights movement in the ’40s) get their due.
Daniels turned to Prada to create nine custom designs for Day – a move that only makes sense as Miuccia Prada herself frequently turns to the ’40s and the ’50s as starting points for her collections.
Prada turned to its archives to reinterpret Holiday’s most famous outfits with a contemporary eye, while staying true to the dress codes of the period.
The showstopping looks include evening gowns in a ’50s silhouette, feather and fringe embellishments, as well as a column dress in double ivory silk satin with a sweetheart neckline and crystal embroidery.
