Before Louis Vuitton, Nicolas Ghesquiere was mainly a ready-to-wear guy, but since joining the French luxury label three years ago, he’s produced one It accessory after another. Noelle Loh discovers Resort 2016’s star pieces in Taipei.
To create the cool optical effect, matte lambskin is stitched onto embossed patent lambskin in a contrasting colour. The bonus inside: a pull-out mirror.
Ghesquiere’s two most recognisable – and best-selling – bags for the house of Vuitton are set to become hotter, thanks to this season’s holiday-mood-inducing print: a blue wavy scrawl inspired by Palm Spring’s swimming pools. In epi leather.
Traditional Japanese sandals reinterpreted in glazed calf leather = the fashion set’s new weekend shoe. Pair with flowing pants and maxi skirts.
Drawing from the Steamer – one of the brand’s oldest and most famous bags, originally meant for storing laundry – Ghesquiere debuts a tote that the modern nine-to-fiver would dig: clean lines, detachable shoulder strap, a padlock and ID tag for a touch of old-world travel, and roomy enough to double as a weekender. In calfskin or croco.
They’re inspired by bandages, but look more like elegant knuckledusters – sold and meant to be worn in a set of three, and sheathed in Monogram, embossed leather or studded leather (they look seriously badass).
In white, they’re like a street version of Princess Leia’s kicks. In brown and with a platform, they’re rebel combat chic. Both make some of the season’s most editorial-worthy shoes – expect to see them on K-pop types as much as edgy dressers.
For architecture fiends: a piece of jewellery modelled after the Joshua Tree House by Kendrick Bangs Kellogg, known for his innovative, organic buildings. To mimic the residence’s sci-fi-looking, scale-like shell, palladium-finished metal is first lacquered for a matte effect, before being sprayed ombre. Every piece is then assembled together by hand.
An adapted version first appeared in Female’s January issue, out on newsstands now.
