The Designer Behind Balenciaga’s Triple S Has His Own Sneaker Brand

by Debby Kwong  /   April 16, 2019

“Our sneakers feel like slippers.” And that’s what got us to look twice at David Tourniaire-Beauciel’s sneaker label, Shoes53045. Why the strange series of numbers, you ask? 53045 spells ‘SHOES’ upside down. With more than 25 years in the footwear industry, Tourniaire-Beauciel has collaborated with Phoebe Philo, Riccardo Tisci, Martin Margiela, and most recently Demna Gvasalia, co-creating Balenciaga’s Triple S sneaker. Now, he’s stepping out on his own.

Designed in Paris, based in Los Angeles and handcrafted by athletic technology experts in China, Shoes53045’s unique sneaker-shoe hybrids with platform bubble air soles come with two different insoles so you can adjust the fit — and they’re entirely vegan, so you know that this direct-to-consumer brand isn’t just about aesthetics. “Before, there was this French proverb saying you need to suffer to be beautiful; now, it’s over, we want to be comfortable,” Tourniaire-Beauciel told Business of Fashion.

Launched in February, the first drop was the Bump’Air in four colourways: black, white, ice and flame. Now the brand has teased the Bump’Air Acid on Instagram, with the caption “shoes for supermodels” as the neon style has been seen on Liu Wen and Gigi Hadid (see below). Shoes53045 plans to have new drops every month or two, and the line will continue to evolve with a wide range of uppers including traditional Oxfords, moccasins and loafers.
