EMPIRE OF THE SUN

To most people, the Los Angeles sunset is great Instagram fodder. For American artist Alex Israel, however, its soft pretty hues have become a running theme in his multi-media work. So for his collaboration with Rimowa, he doesn’t need to look far for ideas, turning to the sunset-drenched colour palette of his Sky Backdrop and “Untitled (Flat) paintings as inspirations.

The result of that creative process is a limited edition run of the brand’s flagship Original aluminium luggage printed with graded colours — a first-of-its-kind for the brand.  To do so, the brand employed new printing techniques to transfer his signature colours onto aluminium. Consider this the perfect show-off luggage the next time you check in at the airport.

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK

There are more options now for the cult of architectural bag-loving girls. Pedder On Scotts is debuting Turkish brand Mlyoure this season as part of its in-store Studio B concept space. Started by former industrial designer Meb Rure, the structured handcrafted designs like a pleated bucket bag and a top handle bag that opens to reveal a nylon drawstring compartment check both the artisanal and novelty boxes. Plus, the hide used is sourced from environmentally-friendly tanneries in Italy, France, and Turkey so green warriors will approve too.

HOT STUFF

German watch company Glashutte Original is following up its special release of a vivid green dial for its Sixties collection (from $10,000) — because it’s an actual vintage line from the era — with a new colour this year. For its latest run, the brand has opted for a fiery orange degrade dial which is varnished with red and black lacquer and made with original tools and techniques from the ’60 like a 60-tonne press for embossing that cracked-like relief pattern.

SHE SO PLASTIC
image

This season’s hot see-through plastic trend may put some of us in a moral dilemma. Thankfully, the OG of sustainable ad eco-fashion Stella McCartney has a less guiltless and innovative solution for those who want to flaunt clear pieces in their wardrobe. This season, her namesake label is using a new non-plastic material on its monogram totes, Falabella bags, sneakers and pumps. The material is said to boast the same qualities as PVC which is by far the most environmentally damaging and toxic of all plastics.

LOOK WHO'S BACK

Alber Elbaz is back… for a second collaboration with LeSportsac that is. The former Lanvin designer continues his capsule range with the bag brand for S/S ’19 as part of the latter’s 45th anniversary celebrations. As with the first collection, the bags are big on the cheerful and whimsical factor and, this time, heavily features the designer’s Party Girls characters appearing as graffiti prints.
