Florals for Spring? Credit: Saint Laurent

Colours can uplift! That’s the message designers are putting out with their Spring/Summer 2022 collections. Whether they’re pleasant pastels for placid daydreams or punchy jewel tones to get you in a going-out mood, the new fashion season is here to help you paint the town red (or blue, green, yellow, you name it).

The va-va-voom energy of the 1970s offered inspiration for both Kim Jones at Fendi (left) and Anthony Vaccarello at Saint Laurent (right). At the former, bright candy pinks and tangerines help evoke a sense of disco and the heyday of Studio 54. Over at SL: a different party that celebrates Paloma Picasso – the muse to whom Yves Saint Laurent dedicated his 1971 “Scandal” collection – that sees Vaccarello tapping into a spirit of exuberance – evident in a wider than usual range of colours and archival floral prints that look fresher than ever.

(Left) Consummate art lover and collector Jonathan Anderson was inspired by Renaissance painter Jacopo da Pontormo for his Loewe collection. Pontormo’s vibrant pastel hues are best exemplified in this look, lifted almost directly from the 1528 painting The Deposition From The Cross, a work of art that kick-started the expressive Mannerist period. (Right) At Burberry, imagination and dreaming as a means of coming alive were Riccardo Tisci’s key ideas. In addition to classic house shades of brown (fawn, birch, walnut), the British brand injected bubblegum accents of pink and – incidentally or not – the Pantone colour of the year, periwinkle purple.
