It’s All About Breaking The Rules At Design Orchard This Season

For two months, the multi-label retail space known for championing Singapore designers is taking an experimental approach when it comes to how you experience fashion.

As conditioned as we are to the traditional Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter calendars, there is no denying that sticking to such seasonal retail formats don’t really apply to Singapore.

“Seasons here include hot, wet, and if you’re really lucky, both,” declared drag queen Becca D’Bus during the press preview of The Non Season, an eclectic public art, fashion and lifestyle event running from now to April 10 at Design Orchard.

Presented by creative collective Hyphen BB that Becca set up with nightlife impresario Bobby Luo and events organiser May Leong, the multi-disciplinary outing is a spawning point for artists and designers alike to question, reject, and reinvent existing structures that define their everyday lives, in whatever form they take.

Visitors can expect newly commissioned art exhibits, panel discussions, live discussions and heritage tours among others – all paying homage to Orchard Road’s deep retail roots. More than that, they celebrate the communities and subcultures that have formed even in the face of intense and perpetual urban planning here.

Ahead, some highlights you won’t want to miss at The Non Season.

THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

Fashion is art. This is clearer than ever with The Non Season’s exclusive fashion and lifestyle capsule collections, which sees Singapore-based artists and designers collaborating to bring them to life.

Key capsule collections include the joint effort between contemporary fashion designer Sabrina Goh and artist Ashley Yeo (pictured) as well as artisanal bag brand Cocoonese and Victoria Hertel.

“I loved Victoria’s strong and organic prints,” shared Cocoonese founder Chloe Wang, “I knew when I saw them that I wanted to work with her.” The Cocoonese and Victoria Hertel collaboration features the latter’s vibrant paintings printed across an array of totes, sling bags, handbags, and clutches.

ART IMITATES LIFE

The Design Orchard building is full to the brim with art, starting from the steps towards the entrance to the window displays and pillars and retail space itself.

Step into the building to find Divaagar’s Tropique Exotique (pictured), an installation inspired by the salacious nightlife venues of yesteryears — creating a lovely juxtaposition between the installation’s ’60s glitz and glamour and the minimalist opulence of the newly constructed environment.

Contrasting elements (bordering on irony) is a common theme among the art featured at The Non Season. In one of the window displays sits Marla Bendini’s Where Else Can We Go?, which probes at ideas of belonging, displacement, and reclamation. The text, spelt out in butterflies, is a direct reference to the same question posed by a Filipino domestic worker when inquired why they continue to frequent Lucky Plaza after a fatal accident killed two others in 2020.

Other artists to look out for include Aki Hassan, Ee Shaun, Howie Kim, Kristal Melson, Masuri Mazlan, Mike HJ Chang, Robert Zhao, Sheryo and Urich Lau.

BIRDS OF A FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER
image

If you find yourself sauntering down the roads of Orchard around sundown, you won’t miss the sight of hundreds and hundreds of Mynah birds flocking to roost, a phenomenon business owners have been trying to (unsuccessfully) stop for years.

Rather than a hindrance, the Singapore Javan Mynah Society founded in the ’80s hoped to turn it into a tourist attraction instead to foster an appreciation of what may be the most symbiotic relationship between urban Singapore and nature.

Paying homage to this group, experience it for yourself with the Mynah Appreciation Society Tours led by photographer and founder of the Institute of Critical Zoologists, Robert Zhao.

Besides the Mynah tours (merch is also available!), heritage enthusiast and photographer Jerome Lim is also hosting Orchard Road Historical Tours, with each one highlighting a different element of days past.

There are also panel discussions revolving around the theme of The Non Season and mending workshops among other activities.
