Say what you want but fashion has an inexplicable attraction towards unconventionally beautiful things. That could explain why brands from Balenciaga to Christopher Kane have collaborated with Crocs in the past and turned its anti-fashion rubber clogs into a hyped-up phenomenon and collectible. This season, there is a sense of deja vu as brands continue to make a statement with their left-field footwear choice.
Take for instance the chunky slides from Givenchy which can, erm, slide into orthopedic territory. Ditto the clogs at Marni and Kate Spade New York which are giving us Dr. Scholl’s flashbacks. Or how about the Frankenstein-like hybrid of a pair of sneakers at Balenciaga which melds influences from welted dress shoes, performance sneakers and the web of muscles beneath the skin and christened as Tyrex. Strange? Definitely Pretty? Depends on who you ask. Retail hit? We’re betting on it.
