We live in a time where a single emoji, GIF, or meme are favoured responses in the digital medium. Dropping a sleepy cat GIF means a hard no to Sunday brunch, and saying I love you is as colourful as the 8 different hues of Whatsapp’s heart emojis. Like these new age forms of self-expression (for better or for worse), Viktor & Rolf took to Spring 2019‘s couture runways to redefine what garments — and style — can convey, they told Vogue Runway. Without eschewing the fantastical form they’re known for, the duo slapped witty slogans and jabs on an array of pastel and neon-tinged sugary confections; “Leave me alone” a mutton-sleeve gown read, while a lilac tulle-overlay number made an unabashed statement in both ruching and a “Go F* yourself” applique (see above). Needless to say, they went viral in the fashion corner of Instagram the week post-show, with the general sentiment (judging by comments on the social platform, naturally) that they’re what many — us included — really, really want to wear.
So while couture unlike ready-to-wear is still for one-percenters, the duo’s response is a five-piece capsule collection available for purchase now — ranging tulle tees, a sweatshirt, jacket and a dress bearing five statements showcased in the original collection. And although these aren’t of the same calibre as a delightfully ruffled couture gown with months in the making from the house (they’re priced a heck more democratically, though), it’s a cheeky nod to the breakneck speed the digital medium and pop culture hurtles ahead at these days.
