In the throwaway culture that is a large part of fashion today, the act of passing your beloved clothing on to a vintage store so that it may find a second life in a new closet somewhere feels almost counter-culture and special. After all, our clothes serve us well – they accompany us on first jobs, bad dates, wine nights and countless TikTok videos – so why not give them that extra bit of life after we’ve grown out of them by letting someone else make new memories with them?
Perhaps that’s the joys of shopping vintage that’s led to a bloom of vintage stores in the local scene. While no official data actually exists that tracks the opening of vintage stores locally, those who spend their weekends out and about would have found themselves walking past more and more vintage outposts.
To be clear, vintage does not equal thrift. There are plenty of thrift stores as well, but not every thrift store is a vintage store, even if they call themselves that. “The global understanding and consensus of vintage refers to anything that’s 20 years and older,” says Isaac Ang, the founder of vintage store Loop Garms. “But it’s also more than an age thing. Vintage clothing has value in the individual stories. The history of a piece of garment also plays a part in how it’s valued, and that process is something that vintage stores offer.”
A stalwart in the local vintage scene in Singapore, Kelly Yeo, who founded Deja Vu Vintage echoed what Ang mentioned. “The word ‘ vintage’ can sometimes be used too casually by some vendors to refer only to vintage-inspired items that are newly-produced in mass quantities, preloved pieces or anything too recent.”

She also cites that “cost of good vintage is higher for good reason”. She adds: “The chief reason they are different is that you’ll find no-longer-available beautiful fabrics, gorgeous designs, cutting, and amazing unexpected details that make up a one-of-a-kind dress or necklace. There’s no danger of running into anyone with the same dress, every piece is a rare find you may treasure forever.”
