9 Timeless Style Lessons We Can All Learn From Zendaya

by Sean Tham  /   September 3, 2018

It girl Zendaya who turned 22 on 1 September 2018 has a lot under her belt. She’s an award-winning actress, an advocate against racial discrimination and champions inclusivity and women’s rights and, the former Disney star often uses her social media platforms to open dialogues on social issues such as bullying. It’s no wonder that she’s been hailed a key voice of her generation — even her clothing line stands for something; Daya by Zendaya celebrates inclusivity by offering sizes up to US22.

And in the style department, there’s more we can glean from her. From going against formal dress codes to nailing the out-of-bed look, above, nine timeless lessons we can all learn from the young starlet.

Here’s how you nail the #IWokeUpLikeThis look, style wise. At the Teens Choice Awards, Zendaya’s pyjama top and matching trousers by Ashish looked anything but sloppy because of one glam factor: sequins, sequins and more sequins.

Dressed in this bespoke brown bell-shaped dress by American fashion designer August Getty, Zendaya mentioned in a tweet that “someone said I looked like an acorn”. But why the ensemble actually works is that she’s gone full out — the slightly off-tone brown stilettos ground the look.

Zendaya won us over as a modern, sophisticated version of Joan of Arc at 2018’s Met Gala: Heavenly Bodies. Here, the (very stylish) armour-like ensemble by Versace looks less like a Halloween get-up and more a bold statement — because, she bares skin in all the right places. Key lesson: go big, but be sure to pare-back in the details.

At Rihanna’s Second Annual Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF) Diamond Ball Gala, Zendaya taught us all an incredibly important lesson: the right amount of midriff to bare. This is just enough to tease, but avoid being labelled trashy.

For the world premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the actress was all business up top and party at the bottom — a classic formula to rocking statement garments.

Her vermilion ribbed pullover and trousers in a matching hue is again exemplary of the timelessness of bold, tone-on-tone outfits, worn at the promotion for the movie Smallfoot.

At 2017’s Met Gala, the actress pulled the classic move of bucking the dress code. The theme was Comme des Garcons, but she turned up in this head-turner from Dolce & Gabbana, marching to her own beat.

Is this three-tiered Marchesa dress going to stop Zendaya from celebrating post-Golden Globe Awards 2016? Hardly. For the after-party, she effectively shortened the gown to mid-calf by tucking the second layer of the crinoline gown into itself so she could dance. Smart move.

Pairing this feminine Moschino satin top with rocking leather trousers to the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Sports Awards in 2016, the polar opposites balance each other out well, creating an unexpected combi with tried-and-tested pieces.
