What’s a ’90s resurgence without the jewellery? French brand Batucada, stocked at Robinsons department stores here, revives the decade’s obsession with body ink-inspired pieces.
Be it layering a bra over your tee like Gwen Stefani during her No Doubt days, or wearing tees and turtleneck tops under slip dresses a la Angela Chase in My So-Called Life, the ’90s produced some truly kick-ass styling moments. This is where Parisian brand Batucada fits into the picture.
For the past 10 years, the brand has been creating plastic jewellery designs that are a throwback to quintessentially ’90s tattoo chokers. The thumbs down about the latter was that they usually stretch after a few wears and can be uncomfortable (think the sweaty marks they leave behind). The ones from Batucada are made of a stretchy but hardy gum-like material that’s wholly produced from recycled materials and said to be nickel-, lead- and latex-free.
Founder Loick Leblond had an idea to create a range of waterproof pieces, thanks to his love of Brazilian beach culture. The designs, however, go beyond the tropical. Besides the floral and tribal motifs, there are also graphic, sinuous shapes. The bonus? The pieces serve double duty, such as an anklet that can be joined with another to form a necklace. $38.50-$72.50
