The Heirloom Watches To Gift Your Mother (and Yourself)

Start a new tradition by giving your mum a timepiece that can be passed on, well, hopefully to you.

by Ho Guo Xiong  /   May 8, 2019

With Mother’s Day coming, why not spoil your mother with an heirloom watch? Despite its hefty price tag, these timepieces are a worthy investment and can increase in value over time, which make them a long-term investment that you (hopefully) will inherit in future.

If you’re prefer a watch that has a more masculine edge to match your androgynous style, we’ve rounded up a couple of legacy men’s watches as well.

The Heirloom Watches To Gift Your Mother (and Yourself)
Cartier Tank Solo watch, large model, rose gold and steel, leather, $7,350
image

Introduced in 1917 and a favourite of the late Princess Diana and former First Lady Michelle Obama, the iconic angular watch face of the Cartier Tank went against the traditional circular silhouettes that were popular then. Now, the boxy watch is a cult favourite for its sophisticated and timeless design that transcends style eras. We especially love the clean silver dial paired against chunky black Roman numerals. The watch is finished with blue hands and a sleek blue sapphire crown — an intriguing and eye-catching choice that we totally approve.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Classic Small Duetto, price available in store
image

Get two watches in one with this innovative design from Jaeger-LeCoultre. The innovative Reverso was first launched in 1931, with a special swivel mechanism that allows the watch face to be flipped, to help polo players protect the watch during games. This chosen design features an understated, classic white dial with blue hands and black digits. But when flipped over, the watch face turns into a  sleek black dial, a case studded with two rows of brilliant-cut diamonds and dauphine hands and hour-markers.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual 34, $6,790
image

Ask any watch collector and they’ll have a Rolex in their collection. With its signature five-pronged crown, the Oyster Perpetual is as emblematic as it gets for the Swiss luxury watchmaker. Touting itself to be the first waterproof watch ever made, the brand uses a proprietary Oystersteel alloy that’s resistant to corrosion. We’ve got our hearts set on this olive green dial automatic timepiece (made with 18 carat gold) as it imparts a underrated, contemporary vibe.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding Ref. #15450SR.OO.1256SR.01, $33,400
image

There are several features that make the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak so well-loved — its distinctive octagonal bezel set with exposed screws and the brand’s “Grande Tapisserie” dial are but just some of them. This design also juxtaposes cool-toned stainless steel with feminine 18 carat pink gold to create a truly outstanding design that deserves to be shown off. Plus, this chunky timepiece is also an automatic watch, so you can slip it on and go without worrying about winding it or ever running out of battery.

Chopard Happy Diamonds Icons Watch 18k rose gold and diamonds, US$31,900 (S$43,412.71)
image

Created for the free-spirited woman, Chopard Happy Diamonds features a feminine circle silhouette set against a sleek 18k rose gold construction. But what makes this timepiece really special, is the seven free moving diamonds between the transparent watch dial and case that dance as you move your hands. Truly a work of art.

Patek Philippe Calatrava 5227J, $43,300
image

Created for the minimalist in mind, this Patek Philippe Calatrava creation is as simple and sleek as it gets. The round yellow gold case and dial is accompanied by a chocolate brown alligator leather strap. The effect? An understated yet timeless and elegant design that is suitable for all ages and genders.

MB&F Legacy Machines LM1 Final Edition, price available in store
image

This MB&F (which stands for Maximilian Büsser & Friends) Legacy Machine series is a truly eye-catching design. This three-dimensional piece features a bespoke 14mm flying wheel balance that gives off both a futuristic and steampunk vibe. Created by Jean-François Mojon and Kari Voutilainen, this timepiece features two smaller dials that can be adjusted for different time zones, making this especially useful for frequent flyers and jet-setters.

IWC Big Pilot’s Watch Spitfire, S$41,100
image

Big is indeed better, especially in the case of this chunky watch from International Watch Co. We love this strong powerful piece that has an 18 karat gold case and calfskin strap. The smaller dial at the 3’o clock position doesn’t actually tell the time but tells you how much battery is left in the power reserve, although this automatic, self-winding system stores up to seven days of power.

A. Lange & Söhne 1815 white gold with dial in argenté, €21.400 (S$32,510.13)
image

Dedicated to the birth year of founder Ferdinand Adolph Lange, this design encapsulates the best of the German watchmaker. Sporting a white gold case and silver dial, this sleek piece is accentuated by the blued steel hands and is a tasteful addition to your collection. We reckon this timepiece is versatile enough to be worn with any outfit for any social occasion.
