#BuySingLit
If you love reading and are serious about wanting to #supportlocal, don’t miss out on this premiere festival that focuses exclusively on promoting stories from local writers. This year’s festival is split over two weekends, held over many locations such as the Arts House and interestingly, Pasir Panjang Power Station, which will feature a books bazaar and what they’re billing as the world’s first silent literary dance party.   While you’re at the Station, do look out for Modern Resonance ll (pictured above), a site-specific performance by sound artist Li-Chuan Chong, spoken word poet Deborah Emmanuel and visual artist Alecia Neo. There are simply too many satellite events going on – check out the jam-packed full list here.   Mar 6 – 8 and Mar 13 – 15   Various locations and times Yong Siak Street Party: 2 Lit 2 Miss
If the thought of Pasir Panjang Power Station’s remote location deters you, head down to Yong Siak street this weekend, where the street’s indie stalwarts such as BooksActually and 40 Hands will be part of the Singapore literature celebration. There’s plenty to do; catch local authors do readings on a bus, learn how to master film photography, book launches by some of our best literary talents such as poet Cyril Wong and tons more. Full details here.   Mar 7 – 8, various times   Yong Siak Street Ari Lennox (US) presented by Collective Minds
Blowing up the R&B/soul scene right now is American singer-songwriter Ari Lennox, whose debut album Shea Butter Baby received universal acclaim when it launched last year – the title track alone has more than 30 million views. Lennox is in town for her first Singapore gig at new music space 222 Arts Club and while early tickets have long sold out, you can still get them at the door. Details here.   Mar 5, 8pm – 11pm   222 Arts Club, 222 Queen Street International Women’s Day Music & Market
FYI, International Women’s Day is this Sunday, March 8 and while opportunistic brands have been waiting in ambush with themed merch, head down to Kult Yard where there’ll be a gorgeous line-up of women vinyl DJs, special live performances by reggae and hip hop queen Mas1a (pictured above looking into the mirror) as well as a market for local female owned and operated businesses. Proceeds from the market will be donated to gender equality non-profit organisation Aware Singapore – now that’s really supporting women’s rights, instead of merely coming up with more of say, T-shirts with slogans.   Details here. Expect fresh produce grown by local farmers, “eco-friendly” products (we need more details, you guys), food stalls, live illustrations, tours of the farm and more.
