Amidst the many Christmas markets this month, why not opt for one that’ll actually get your brain synapses firing? That and more recommendations, this way.
A Land Imagined by director Yeo Siew Hua snagged the Golden Leopard award (the top prize) at the prestigious Locarno Film Festival back in August 2018, becoming the first Singapore director to do so, and more recently, it picked up the Best Original Screenplay & Best Original Film Score at last month’s Golden Horse Awards as well. The surrealist work follows a police investigator as he sets out to solve the mystery behind the disappearance of a migrant Chinese construction worker from a land reclamation site.
If you’ve yet to catch it, here’s the perfect chance to do so, especially with a rare Q&A with director Yeo. Get your tickets here.

Independent electronical label Evening Chants has organised some of the best underground indie music events in Singapore and their next gig looks to keep in line with that DNA. The location is secret for now but as always, their line-up are interesting, including an appearance by new experimental-meets-classic music band Kou Musik, that will apparently be playing in a “completely dark” venue. Consider us intrigued. Sign up here now.
Dec 14, 7pm – 12am
Yet another Christmas market but hey, at least you’ll get to keep your brain synapses active with this one – it’s by local book publisher Epigram, which is home to some of our best-selling local authors, including Balli Kaur Jaswal, Jeremy Tiang, Nuraliah Norasid and O Thiam Chin. Surely a book snapped up from this sale will be a far more worthy Christmas gift than say, the usual coffee mug, right? Details here.
