Entitled Daido Moriyama: Prints and Books from 1960s – 1980s, the exhibition kicked off last Friday, Oct 7 with an opening party and runs till November 13. Part of the biennial Singapore International Photography Festival, Moriyama is known for his trailblazing photographic style of are, bure and boke – Japanese terms for grainy, blurry and out of focus respectively.

Back in the 1960s where a “good” photograph consisted of sharp, well-composed shots, Moriyama’s blurry photographs were unconventional to say the least. It might be all the rage now with indie photographers, but let’s not forget that Moriyama was doing it nearly half a century ago. He was also more interested in exploring the seedy underbelly of society and capturing the forgotten and unseen.

Never-before-seen images and prints will also be on show for the first time, so if you’re interested in non-mainstream photography and a unique look at Japanese society (read: not the usual minimalistic/pretty pretty Japan), this is definitely the exhibition to be at. Free admission for SIPF festival pass holders or $15 each, buy them here
