5 Cool Things To Do This Week: Peroni Sunset Cinema, Dua Lipa And More

Kicking off May in style: three different film festivals (more appeal for a broader demographic, yay), Zouk’s 27th anniversary and New Rules singer Dua Lipa’s first full-fledged concert here.

Singapore Chinese Film Festival
It’s the 15-year anniversary of much loved Hong Kong superstar Leslie Cheung’s death and the Singapore Chinese Film Festival is holding a special tribute by screening several of his best known films, including the Wong Kar Wai-directed Happy Together (above), in which Cheung starred together with Tony Leung as a troubled pair of lovers. Aside from the Leslie Cheung tribute, there are also documentaries, shorts films and Golden Horse Award-winnning works that will be screened – 50 of which are premiering in Singapore for the first time. Don’t miss out on this choice opportunity to catch up on some of the best of Chinese arthouse films, both past and present. On now till May 6, various locations more details here   Peroni Sunset Cinema
Back for its second edition after a  well-received debut last year, Peroni Sunset Cinema is once again bringing back a slate of award-winning films, most notably those nominated at this year’s Oscars, such as (Best Picture winner) monster-romance flick The Shape of Water, tennis drama I, Tonya and journalist drama The Post (very relevant in this age of Trump). In case you aren’t familiar with the premise of Peroni Sunset Cinema, it’s basically an open-air film festival set by the beach (Tanjong Beach, in this case) with great nosh, drinks, music and an Instagram-ready atmosphere as you loll about beach waiting for the film to start. Many of the screenings are already selling out fast, so we wouldn’t dawdle. You’ve read our profile of Dua Lipa when she was Female‘s cover star for the July 2017 issue, but what a difference a year makes. Early 2017 sure, she was definitely a rising act to keep an eye on but Lipa’s definitely morphed into a legit pop star who racks up billions of views on Youtube. The last time she was here, it was an intimate fan gathering showcase but she’s since moved on to a full-blown concert held at The Star. What else can we say other than we’ll be there come Friday night? May 4, 8pm-10pm, more details here The Star Performing Arts Centre A Very Wes Anderson May
Yep, it’s yet another film festival but this one ain’t run of the mill. Design lovers and hipsters everywhere will undoubtedly be flocking to The Projector’s Wes Anderson-themed mini festival – presumably to build up anticipation before they screen the director’s latest work, Isle of Dogs. Yes, there’ll be the fan favourites The Darjeeling Limited, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Moonrise Kingdom (where’s The Royal Tenenbaums though?) alongside some of his less prominent works such as Fantastic Mr.Fox and Bottle Rocket. Bonus: There’s even a Wes Anderson-themed bake-off on May 20, so get ready to chow down. May 4 – 30, various times, more details here The Projector, #05-00 Golden Mile Tower Zouk's 27th Anniversary
