May is definitely the month for film fans – from Singapore’s first ever silent cinema held at the beach, to award-winning French films, here are the six film events you should not miss this month.
If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, check out this outdoor film screening event that will be held at the scenic location of Sentosa’s Tanjong Beach. Films screened will include highly lauded films such as sci-fi flick Arrival, and the drama Lion. Presented by Voilah! French Festival 2017, this film event will screen four highly acclaimed French films that have all won the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. If you’re a foodie, this is the film event for you. As part of Singapore Heritage Festival 2017, the Asian Civilisations Museum will be screening Singaporean films on conversations, relationships and stories that revolve around food and eating. Catch films such as Old Friends (2015) and Wanton Mee (2015) by renowned local directors Royston Tan and Eric Khoo, while enjoying other food-themed exhibitions and tours. For something more family-friendly, there is the French Animation Film Festival presented by Voilah! 2017. Six movies will be screened this year, including the shortlist for Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards, Ma Vie de Courgette (My Life As A Zucchini) by Claude Barras, as well as musical adventure comedy Ballerina (Leap!) by Eric Summer and Eric Warin, and Michel Ocelot’s new film Ivan Tsarevitch et la Princesse Changeante (Ivan Tsarevich and the Changing Princess). Enjoy a complete retrospective of French screenwriter, director and actor Jacques Tati, presented by the National Museum of Singapore’s cinematheque. In the lineup is of all six of his feature-length films – Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday, Mon Oncle, a colourised version of Jour de fête, the little-seen Parade, the revelatory Traffic and Playtime – the latter two will be screened as part of Voilah! 2017 – along with four short films that contributed to the creation of his full-length cinematic masterpieces. Commissioned by the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre and produced by award-winning filmmaker Royston Tan, 667 is an anthology of shorts by local film directors such as Kirsten Tan (POP AYE) and Eva Tang (The Songs We Sang). The films revolve around the Singaporean filmmakers and their reflections, interpretations, and perspectives as they go on a journey in search of their cultural roots.
