5 Cool Events To Check Out This Week: May 30-June 2

It’s the start of June this weekend – where does all the time go? If you only have time for one event, head down to Gillman Barracks this week to get a rare glimpse of new works by graffiti legend Futura, who counts art titans such as Keith Haring, Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat as his peers.

Futura: Constellations
If you’re at all interested in street art, you’ll probably know the legendary Futura – he’s one of the originals of the New York contemporary graffiti scene dating back to the ’70s and he’s in town this week for Constellation – his first solo exhibition in the region. Expect up to 30 brand-new works as well as exciting merch to cop – both at the show and at Dover Street Market Singapore. There’s also a new documentary on the artist this Saturday at The Projector where Futura will be there in person for a meet & greet. More details here. May 30 – June 9, 12pm – 8pm Gillman Barracks, Lock Road, Block 9, #02-21 The Future Is Female
Taksu Galleries over at Chip Bee Gardens is putting on a new show called The Future is Female and the line-up, as you can guess, features only women artists from Singapore and around the region. One name you might recognise is artist and illustrator Allison M.Low, who is best-known for her surrealistic and wonderfully detailed drawings, such as the one pictured above – a commissioned work for Female’s October 2018 issue. We shouldn’t really still have to deal with this in 2019 but studies have shown that women artists’ works still sell at much lower prices compared to their male counterparts, so an all-female show like this one is a great initiative to support. More details here. May 30 – June 23 Taksu Galleries, 43 Jalan Merah Saga #01-72 Italian Film Festival 2019
This year’s edition of the film festival features 11 contemporary works and one of the key highlight is the critically acclaimed drama/thriller Dogman (2018) by Matteo Garrone (pictured above), which focuses on an affable dog groomer who does drug-dealing reluctantly on the side. Things start to go downhill when the local bully starts singling him out as his go-to dealer and “pal”. More details here.
