Meet 2019's Winner Of The Dior Photography Award For Young Talents

The second edition of Dior's Photography Award For Young Talents saw 21-year-old creative Gangao Lang taking home the trophy.

After an inaugural run of the first Dior Photography Award For Young Talents in 2017, Christian Dior Parfums is back this year with the sophomore edition of the contest that’s held in partnership with the Ecole Nationale Superieure de la Photographie d’Arles (ENSP) and hosted by Luma Arles. The competition aims to encourage the emergence of talented young visual artists as well as initiating dialogue within the world’s leading photography schools.

This year’s theme was “femininity, beauty, colour” – the common thread of founding values which photography and the House of Dior were built upon.

Gangao Lang, a Chinese photographer from the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts was announced as the winner. Her winning work “Second Self-Introduction,” is influenced by paintings. She states that “beauty is a global language, which takes a young girl with a dream as a starting point, and ends up as a woman with a vision.”

This year’s contest comprised of a class of ten and was presided over by French photographer Dominique Issermann, Maja Hoffmann (President and Founder of Luma Arles), Simon Baker (Director of the Maison Européenne de la Photographie), Sonia Sieff (photographer), Peter Philips (Creative and Image Director for Dior Makeup), and Claude Martinez (President and CEO of Christian Dior Parfums).

In accompaniment to the winning title, Gangao Lang will receive a €10,000 grant from the luxury fashion house who will also commission a creative piece from her. Scroll through her award-winning pieces below.
