5 Cool Events To Check Out This Week: November 21 - 25

Yes it may be Black Friday but shopping aside, make sure to check out the huge Minimalism exhibition, or head down to Sentosa at night for picture-perfect neon art installations by the beach. Here, our recommendations for the week:

Minimalism: Space. Light. Object
Yes the Yayoi Kusama retrospective earlier this year made a ton of buzz (predictably on social media) but this is the blockbuster exhibition anyone even remotely curious about art should attend. Jointly taking place across two anchor museums — National Gallery and ArtScience Museum —  Minimalism: Space. Light. Object is the first survey of the Minimalist art movement in South-East Asia. With more than 150 works of art by household names such as Anish Kapoor, Ai Wei Wei, Olafur Eliasson, Martin Creed as well as Singapore’s own Jeremy Sharma, it’s a must-see. More details here and here. On now till April 14, 2019 National Gallery and ArtScience Museum Studio Screening: Marina Abramovic in Brazil — The Space In Between
Acclaimed performance artist Marina Abramovic travelled to Brazil in 2012 in search of something that could soothe her “emotional and personal troubles”, boldly seeking out all sorts of traditional shamans and remedies. Is this the artistic version of Eat Pray Love? We can’t say for sure yet but we will know tonight. More details here. November 21, 7pm – 9pm The Hive, 59 New Bridge Road Island Lights 2018
Returning for the second edition of its night-time art extravaganza, the initiative, started by Sentosa Development Board, sees a total of 10 large-scale works scattered all around Palawan Beach. There are lots of familiar names, such as local fashion and art collective Mash-Up, as well as lighting and set virtuoso Tina Fung, who designed this striking hand-shaped installation (pictured above) aptly named ‘Harmony’. Look out too for artist Yang (she’s the co-founder of working space/dive bar 21 Moonstone), who came up with an immersive indoor installation entitled ‘ASMR Wonder’ (auto sensory meridian response) that, going by the trending experience it’s named after, looks set to tickle all of our senses instead of just purely visuals. More details here. On now till December 31 Palawan Beach, Sentosa Electric Feel: C'mon Do The 80s With Me
Finally, a non ’90s-themed party. Will the kids come? Who knows but we sure will, with Kylie, Cyndi, Maddie, Rick, Michael, Prince, Janet, Wham, Depeche Mode, New Order, Talking Heads, The Cure and more one-hit wonders from the fluorescent decade. DJs weelikeme & KiDG will be the spin masters taking you back to the era of aerobic videos. Come dressed to match. More details here. November 24, 10.30pm – 4am Hard Rock Cafe, 50 Cuscaden Road Electro Ball 2018: Hong Kong Glitz
If you’ve always been enamoured by the languid glamour of the ’20s, here’s a good chance to dress up: Electro Ball returns this Saturday and the theme is Hong Kong set in the ’20s/30s — expect “strains of jazz mingled with Hollywood film music and Chinese folk melodies in the night air”, so dress to impress and live out Maggie Cheung in In The Mood For Love fantasies. There will reportedly a speakeasy, mahjong room, drag performances, live DJ sets and more. Details here. November 24, 8pm – 2am Madame Fan, 32 Beach Road
