The film industry has really upped its game in 2017. From the horror film Get Out, which was not only entertaining but gave an insightful take on racial fears, to the surprisingly dark yet moving X-Men offering Logan, and of course who can forget the critically acclaimed Wonder Women? The box office powerhouse has so far made about USD $747 million worldwide and is one of the most critically acclaimed movies in the DC universe.

However, if you think the best movies of the year have come and gone, think again. Here, we list some of the best and biggest movies that are currently or soon to be showing that you need to catch.

Spider-Man: Homecoming

Director: Jon Watts
Release: Now Showing

The reboot meant to infuse a more youthful vibe to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is already a success, with an estimated USD $257 million worldwide opening. One of the best-reviewed superhero films ever, it follows a young Peter Parker dealing with his newfound abilities under the guidance of the always popular Tony Stark.

War for the Planet of the Apes

Director: Matt Reeves
Release: 13th July

Said to be the final chapter in Caesar’s story, this franchise stays compelling because it is often the apes that the audience roots for, and who show more humanity than the actual humans in the film.

It

Director: Andres Muschietti
Release: 7th September

Based on the hugely popular Stephan King novel, this remake of Pennywise the clown terrorising the children of Derry, Maine looks set to be as terrifying as the original as it brings to life one of our greatest fears from childhood. The trailer is scary enough to give you nightmares.

Thor: Ragnarok

Director: Taika Waititi
Release: 26th October

The third Thor film is set after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, with Thor held captive on the planet Sakaar without his hammer fighting his way home to prevent the impending Ragnarok, the doom of Asgardian civilisation. We are looking forward to it bringing us all the classic elements of a Marvel movie: humour, a strong(-ish) pot and kickass fight scenes.

Justice League

Director: Zack Synder
Release: 16th November

To be honest, after the snoozefest that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, we weren’t exactly waiting with baited breath for mega superhero movie. However, after the Wonder Woman renewed our faith in the DC Universe, with additions of characters like Aquaman and the Flash, we are definitely rooting for this to succeed.

Since the massive success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens (the movie pulled in about USD $2 billion worldwide) two years ago, we have been anticipating this sequel. Hopefully, we’ll finally be given the answer to the question of who is Ren’s father.
