5 Cool Events To Check Out This Week: April 24 - 28

Yes, it sucks going back to work after a long weekend, so perk up with a double-bill screening of horror classics at Chye Seng Huat cafe and party up at the Crystal Ball for all you fans of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

SCUM Cinema x CSHH Presents: Double Horror Movie Night
Chye Seng Huat Hardware is teaming up with Singapore Society for Cult & Underground Movies to put on a double-bill screening of cult classics this Friday night. Fans of the genre might have caught either before —The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) and Poltergeist (1982) but watching them at a cafe ought to put a new spin on things. More details here. April 26, 7.45pm – 10pm Chye Seng Huat Hardware, 150 Tyrwhitt Road The Late Breakfast Club
Have yet to check out Dempsey Hill’s new lifestyle destination Siri House? Here’s a good chance to: they’re putting on a brunch that fetes pillowy pancakes — it’s $65+++ for a free flow of pancakes and 11 toppings in total. That may sound quotidian but perhaps when you consider the toppings include seared foie gras with spiced orange sauce and crab fat crema with soy-marinated ikura, it’s kind of a done deal. More details here. April 28, 11am – 4pm Siri House, 8D Dempsey Road #01-02 Packaging Matters: Singapore’s Food Packaging Story from the Early 20th Century
Let’s face it, recent years have seen a massive revival of nostalgia in Singapore, especially in the design sector — some might even say it’s overdone. Precisely why you should be heading down to the National Museum of Singapore to check out the originals for yourself in their latest exhibition, Packaging Matters. It features more than 150 artefacts from the early bottling and canning factories in the late 19th to early 20th centuries to the more industrialised designs of the ’60s and ’70s. Now, we’re not saying nostalgia is a bad thing, especially when it’s for the (ironically) more eco-friendly packaging such as the glass bottles of yore. More details here. On now till September 15, 10am – 7pm National Museum of Singapore, 93 Stamford Road Kazuko Koike Talk Event: A Life with MUJI
Design fiends shouldn’t miss out on this seminar, which features Kazuko Koike as the guest star. She’s a creative director at Muji and will be discussing how the Japanese lifestyle giant got its start and how it’s evolved since its inception in 1980. She’ll also be joined by local luminaries Grace Tan and Theseus Chan who will be sharing their thoughts on design. More details here. April 26, 4pm – 6pm SOTA, 1 Zubir Said Drive The Crystal Ball
If you’re a big fan of RuPaul’s Drag Race, don’t miss out on the Crystal Ball, which, in their own words, is a “celebration for anyone whose lights are dimmed by society — a time for all of us to freely shine (and outshine)”. There’ll be various competitions going on with themes such as futurism and ’80s beauty pageants (of course), followed by an after-party. Can we get a yas, queen? More details here. April 27, 8pm – 3am Intermission Bar at The Projector, #05-00 Golden Mile Tower
