#1: Altered Carbon (2 Feb)

This sci-fi series just premiered a couple of days ago, and has already received lots of promising reviews. Some critics have compared it to the classic neo-noir sci-fi film Blade Runner, and others have suggested that this might be the most expensive series Netflix has ever produced. That’s by and large thanks to the stylish – and very expensive-looking – visuals, where CGI seems to have been used extensively to create the gorgeous and futuristic landscape the show is set in. Based on the 2002 novel of the same name by Richard K. Morgan, the show follows the story of one Takeshi Kovacs (Joel Kinnaman), a former elite soldier who has now been tasked to investigate the murder of a wealthy man.

#2: When We First Met (9 Feb)

The trailer for this romantic-comedy film just dropped recently, and has already racked up millions of views on Youtube and Facebook. Not surprising too, as the story’s premise – of a guy getting friend-zoned, basically – is much too relatable. Noah Ashby (Adam Devine) is this unlucky dude, and the plot focuses on his efforts to win over the girl of his dreams, Avery (Alexandra Daddario), via time travel. Yes, it sounds totally absurd, and the rom-com has already drawn comparisons to the 1993 fantasy-comedy classic Groundhog Day. The verdict is still out on whether the film might live up to the hype of the trailer, but Netflix seems to be betting hard on its V-Day appeal by releasing it right before Valentine’s Day.

#3: Everything Sucks! (16 Feb)

Well, the title of this brand new series has already won us over, because yes, everything does suck very much right now. Jokes aside, the title of the show is highly reflective of the plot – riding on the current nostalgia wave with shows such as Stranger Things, Everything Sucks! is a teen dramedy set in Boring, Oregon, in the 1990s. The story revolves around two groups of teenagers in high school – the A/V club and the Drama club, and deals with the characters’ everyday lives while they figure out school, parents, relationships, bullying and the like. This coming-of-age series is definitely one for the 90s kids, as the show is sure to feature lots of references from the decade, from the fashion to the iconic Walkman CD players.

#4: Irreplaceable You (16 Feb)

Get your boxes of tissue ready, because you will cry your eyes out with this drama film about two best friends and romantic soul mates whose entire lives are upended when one gets diagnosed with terminal cancer. It is no wonder that Netflix jumped on the rights for this film in a multi-million dollar deal, as it features a strong, star-studded cast. The directorial debut of former Veep producer Stephanie Liang, the two leads for the film are played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Black Mirror’s San Junipero, Beauty and the Beast, and the upcoming A Wrinkle in Time) and Michiel Huisman (Nashville, Daario Naharis in Game of Thrones). Rounding up the stellar cast are big names such as American actor Christopher Walken and Saturday Night Live alum Kate McKinnon.

#5: Mute (23 Feb)

It seems like Netflix is on a roll with their sci-fi offerings, as apart from Altered Carbon, the streaming giant is gearing up for the release of Mute at the end of this month. A mystery/ sci-fi film, the trailer was just released a few days ago, and if you’re a fan of dystopian-set movies such as Ghost in the Shell, this will surely be right up your alley. Helmed by Warcraft (2016) director Duncan Jones, this thriller is set in Berlin, and tells the tale of a mute bartender who delves into the criminal underworld to search for his girlfriend, who has mysteriously disappeared. If you’re still not convinced, then watch this film just for the A-list cast – Alexander Skarsgård stars as the main protagonist, with Paul Rudd, Justin Theroux and Sam Rockwell playing supporting characters.
