5 Cool Events To Check Out This Week: Nosaj Thing, SG Short Film Festival And More

Singapore Shorts '19
An annual showcase of local short films from rising names and students alike, Singapore Shorts is always a great place to discover new SG talents through a very accessible medium. This year’s selection also includes post-screening discussions with the filmmakers and a selection of older works curated by feted playwright Alfian Sa’at. Pictured above: Foul Ball (2018, dir. Kayue Li), a 15-minute short on a young baseball player striving to improve his skills. More details here. Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira (1988), a cyberpunk story set in a dystopic Tokyo, is one of the most influential animated film of all time – The Matrix, Dragon Ball Z and even Kanye West and Michael Jackson have all cited being inspired by Akira at some point. You might have heard that Hollywood is attempting a live-action remake with Thor: Ragnorak director Taiki Waititi that’s been stuck in production hell for years – though perhaps that’s a good thing. STPI – Creative Workshop & Gallery is putting on a screen of the film in conjunction with the ongoing Takashi Murakami exhibition, so it’s a great chance to catch both in one setting. New tea cafe Antea Social has been drawing the crowds for its excellent teas (and cakes) and let’s just be honest, gorgeous facade (clock that Hobbit-esque window). But they’re also starting to explore after-dark options with tea-based cocktails and this weekend, they’re putting on a relaxing evening together with Evening Chants, an experimental electronic music label. There’ll be live DJ sets churning out ambient and new-age music. Head down this weekend if you’re looking to take a breather. Details here. Electronic music record producer Nosaj Thing, who has collaborated with the likes of Radiohead, Kendrick Lamar and Chance the Rapper, is back in town for another gig, which also stars Hong Kong/Shanghai/London-based collective Yeti Out and local stalwarts Ramesh and SWTLKR. Yes it’s a film-heavy weekend – before you watch Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time.. in Hollywood (which opens in SG this week), catch up with his earlier work, Pulp Fiction (1994). There’ll be milkshakes, burgers and a dance-off right after the screening, though we suggest not over doing the former if you’re going to be participating. More details here.
