Asian Restored Classics
Not a big fan of Crazy Rich Asians? You’ll want to hit up Asian Restored Classics, an annual film festival presented by the Asian Film Archive. Back for its third edition, this year features a total of nine classic works from the ’20s to the ’90s, and get this: they’re all showing in Singapore for the first time. Our picks? Foodie favourite Tampopo (pictured above), the evergreen Tokyo Story and cult ’90s hit Made In Hong Kong. More details here. August 24 – September 2, various timings Gallery Theatre, National Museum of Singapore and Capitol Theatre ContraDiction XIV
One of the key highlights of the annual IndigNation festival, ContraDiction represents a night of LGBTQ literary readings. Now in its 14th edition, the event will feature a host of both established and up-and-coming poets, poetry collectives and local musicians, making this a night not to be missed. More details here. August 25, 7.30pm – 10.30pm 6 Sarkies Road En Bloc, or Buildings Must Die
In case you weren’t aware, Golden Mile Complex might be poised for an en bloc sale, along with three other local architectural icons — People’s Park Complex and People’s Park Centre in Chinatown, and Golden Mile Tower on Beach Road. To say it would be a huge loss to Singapore’s landscape would be an understatement. Whether you like it or not, their distinctive, Brutalism-informed designs aren’t easily reproduced. The Substation has came up with a series of events to promote awareness: an exhibition, “experiences” where visitors can go on self-guided tours to explore the hidden parts of the buildings, plus workshops and performances. There’s a lot to take in, but that just means that there’ll be something for everyone to check out. More details here. August 21 – September 23, various timings The Substation, 45 Armenian Street Pasir Panjang Power Station Open House Art Market
If there’s one thing Singaporeans love, it’s bazaars held in unusual locations — proven again and again with examples such as Artbox and similar markets staged at the former Tanjong Pagar Railway Station. Organisers The Local People has collaborated with the Singapore Land Authority on a one-day-only art market, this time at the normally off-limits Pasir Panjang Power Station. There’ll be plenty of nosh, shopping, artworks and live DJ sets, and the event goes from noon till midnight, so there’ll be plenty of time to come down whenever. More details here. August 22, 12pm – 12am Pasir Panjang Power Station, 7 Pasir Panjang Road 90s Boom Boom Party + A Tinge of 00s
Need to unwind from a stressful week? If you’re a Millennial, this is the place to let loose. The theme’s all in the name, so I guess we can expect Mr Brightside and all the usual (but forever gold) anthems of those decades. More details here. August 25, 10pm – 4am HopHeads, 178 Clemenceau Avenue
