We’ve had our eye on new art initiative S.E.A. Focus for quite some time now — it’s one of our must-see highlights of Singapore Art Week. Frankly, the initiative (organised by STPI Creative Workshop & Gallery) and its alluring premise on being a streamlined platform to highlight Southeast Asian contemporary art and galleries, is one we can definitely get behind.
Taking place from Jan 24 – 27, the inaugural edition of S.E.A. Focus materialises in the form of a boutique art fair and will be staged in a special pop-up structure at Gillman Barracks. As for what to expect: there’ll be a full suite of exciting visual arts and lifestyle activities, from internationally-toured museum exhibitions to public art, special art tours, live music and performances.
Thanks to S.E.A. Focus’s more intimate nature (26 galleries are participating), it looks likely to be a cosy affair. From Singapore, there’ll be familiar institutions such as Art Porters, Gajah Gallery and Chan + Hori Contemporary while international names to expect include 47 Canal (New York),The Columns Gallery (Seoul), Nadi Gallery (Jakarta) and Gallery VER (Bangkok) — many of which will be making their Singapore art fair debut.
But it isn’t all just fancy names in the art world swanning about for hardcore connoisseurs; there are also smaller, more accessible initiatives such as #SEAcommunity, which is designed for children and school groups to deepen their appreciation of art. “Through providing a spectrum of arts and lifestyle experiences for international collectors and local audiences, we hope that S.E.A. Focus will engage new audiences and provide fresh perspectives into Southeast Asia’s rapidly evolving arts scene,” says Audrey Yeo, project director of S.E.A. Focus.
As for us, we’ll be looking out for new works by local luminaries such as Ruben Pang, Jeremy Sharma and Priyageetha Dia. Given recent upheavals in the local art scene — like the abrupt cancellation of this year’s Art Stage Singapore — S.E.A. Focus, with its emphasis on local and regional art, becomes an even more crucial and distinctive space for which art enthusiasts (amateur or otherwise), should definitely check out.
