Located in a 1,300 sq ft former machinery shop, Maman serves up French and American-inspired comfort food. It’s the many design details here that make Maman so charming. The exposed brick walls, pockmarked floor, tin ceilings, and second-hand furniture provide in lived in feel that you may not want to leave behind. 239 Centre Street, New York

It’s hard to get a table here, but that’s because it’s just SO good. For a taste of classic American fare with a slight Middle Eastern bent visit on weekday afternoons where you’re more likely to have better luck securing a spot. 50 Carmine Street, New York

Holborn Grind is part of espresso bar chain, Grind, and it’s one of its coolest at that. Located in The Hoxton hotel, it’s an espresso and cocktail bar with brass shelves suspended from the ceiling making up the centrepiece of its décor. 199 High Holborn, Holborn, London

#5: Squirrel

Designed to look like a tree house, Squirrel is taking healthy-eating a whole step further by infusing fun. Salads are served in large acorn-shaped bowls and you help yourself to a free flow of refreshments from drinking stations that resemble wells. 11 Harrington Road, South Kensington, London

You’ll find the finest in food and fashion at multi-label store Boutique 1, which carries brands such as Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang, Victoria Beckham, and Missoni. #7: Bar Luce

Bar Luce, located in the Fondazione Prada, comes straight out of director Wes Anderson’s fantastical mind. Just like his whimsical films -The Royal Tenenbaums, Moonrise Kingdom and The Grand Budapest Hotel – Bar Luce gets a dreamy vintage effect with colour-blocked Formica tables, pinball machines, a jukebox and patterned wallpaper. Largo Isarco 2, Milan
