The Projector Culture Docs: British Museum presents Hokusai
Okay, pretty much everyone has come across ukiyo-e painter and printmaker Hokusai’s famous Under the Wave off Kanagawa print at one point or another. It’s another thing however, to delve more in-depth into the man behind that iconic print. The first UK documentary on the legendary artist, it examines his life and works dating back to the early 1800s, narrated by actor Andy Serkis (we’re not even going to make any Gollum jokes here). Ah the Polaroid. Who hasn’t handled one of these — or any of its variations — at some point in their lives? Though the first instant cameras date back to the ’40s, Polaroid models continue to be popular despite the age of social media. In fact, if you think about it, the instant gratification of everything on social media today alludes back to the Polaroid, which gave you instant results without all the hassle of traditional film cameras. This blockbuster exhibition will be staging some 220 artefacts and artworks that examine the instant camera’s effect on not just art, photography but also pop culture as a whole. More details here.
