5 Cool Events To Check Out This Week: December 19 - 23

It’s the final weekend before Christmas but if you’re done with shopping (lucky you), head on down to the premiere of Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma and a mysterious “moon-bathing” session at new book cafe, The Moon.

ROMA with Alfonso Cuaron
As you’ll probably have read by now, Roma, the latest work by Mexican auteur Alfonso Cuaron, is a Oscar hopeful that’s been picking up awards left and right (the most prominent being the top prize at the Venice Film Festival) and loads of love from the critics. A Netflix Original film, Roma is a story set in Mexico in the ’70s, centred around a young domestic worker and the middle-class family she works for. This Thursday, the director himself will be in town for a screening of the film and a Q&A after — an extremely rare chance to meet a director of this calibre. For the uninitiated, he’s the same guy behind popular works such as Gravity and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban but also the seminal Children of Men. More details here. December 20, 7.30pm – 11pm  Filmgarde Cineplexes Bugis+ Moon Bathing: Full Moon Gong Bath
You might have heard of shinrin-yoku — “forest bathing” — or the Japanese belief (and practice) of healing through spending time in nature. Now new bookstore cum cafe The Moon is putting on a “moon bathing” session this Friday “designed to restore energy fields, rebalance the rebalance the body’s frequencies, and rejuvenate the entire being, while alleviating stress and clearing the mind.” If you’re crushed by stress and not feeling the Christmas spirit, you know where to be this Friday. More details here. December 21, 8pm – 9pm The Moon, 37 Mosque Street  Hard Luck Club / 13 Years of Eatmepoptart
It’s Poptart’s 13th anniversary — who would have thought the indie pop party series, started by DJ weelikeme and KiDG, would have such longevity? To celebrate the milestone, they’re taking to the water — the party will be held this Saturday on the Stewords Riverboat — which used to house A&W back in the day. The first floor will be dedicated to ’80s hits and other pop anthems while there’ll be a rock ‘n’ roll karaoke bar on the second floor to channel your inner Freddie Mercury. More details here. December 22, 10pm – 4am Stewords Riverboat, 31 Marina Coastal Drive A City Without Snow w/ Middle Class Cigars
Independent record label Middle Class Cigars houses some of the most exciting up-and-comers in the local music scene right now — such as Sobs, Subsonic Eye and Cosmic Child — and they’re putting on an intimate show at new record store cum bar White Label Records featuring live performances from all three bands and more this weekend. Better yet, it’s a completely free event, so head on down for some great local tunes and drinks to match. More details here. December 22, 6pm – midnight White Label Records, 28 Ann Siang Road #01-01 Book swap at The Moon
If you’re looking to be woke (read: environmentally friendly) this holiday season — the best way is not to shop for presents at all and make do with what you already have. Here’s our tips to doing so in Christmas but another way to do so are swaps; book worms should head down to book cafe The Moon this weekend for their first book swap. More details here. December 22, 2pm – 6pm The Moon, 22 Mosque Street
