At a time when social distancing has become so entrenched in our daily lives, it’s a luxury to want to reach for, touch and feel things. Fashion serves as the perfect outlet for this and Pierpaolo Piccioli makes a strong case for tactility with Valentino Collezione Milano for Spring/Summer 2021.

As a special treat, FEMALE took our camera along to the brand’s recent presentation to give you a first-person POV (a.k.a VIP treatment) of the standout pieces from the collection.

Decked out in verdant plants and flowers by botanical design studio This Humid House, the lush setup harked back to the installation by Japanese plant artist Satoshi Kawamoto, who decorated a metallurgical foundry in Milan where Valentino held its runway show last September.

In typical Valentino fashion, there is a strong sense of romance infused in the designs, but given a more effortless quality with pared-down silhouettes to go with the times. The richness of the collection comes in the form of decorative finishes like lace, macrame, crochet and straw embroidery seen on sweaters, dresses shirts and sneakers – a nod to the Italian house’s couture craftsmanship.

Florals are the other recurring motifs that add to the joie de vivre of the designs. Here, they appear as vivid prints of spring blooms like peonies, lily and anemone which were mined from the archives and plastered on a brilliant rainbow palette. Not to be outdone, three-dimensional floral appliques are also generously used on bags like the Valentino Garavani 03 Rose Edition Atelier.

The house’s signature punk-inspired stud hardware also adds to the high sensorial drama. Supersized and renamed as the Valentino Garavani Roman Stud, it’s a cool-meets-classy detail that partly pays tribute to the bugnato facade of Roman palazzos. They make their presence felt on a series of footwear and cushion bags, including a design festooned in gold studs (jump to 0:27 for reference).
